#1994, "Night Wall report 5/17"

My wall foray was delayed by spacing out and forgetting my license at home. On my detour to Pacific Edge to buy a one-day, I miscalculated which route to take and ended up backtracking, thus delaying me getting out the wall. I ended up getting there about 7 pm instead of the 6 pm I had planned. Very smooth ride out so I ventured to the outside of the Long Beach section. No bites there. There was a good swell pushing through the rocks, so I moved inside to take advantage of it. The best spot (and the one I sat at most of the night) was the west end of the LB portion. The bite was so-so. You had to keep the bait right in the rocks--they weren't coming out tonight. I got some fish on the 5 inch Hammer before sunset and then the 5 inch Assalt skirted grub was the ticket. Even though there was little current or wind, I needed a 3/4 oz. football head to keep the bait in contact with the rocks. Dabbing-on Pro-Cure Calico Cocktail helped remedy the short bites. The bite was best when the boat was within 25 feet of the rocks. I ended up catching and releasing 17 bass to 2#, all calicos except 2 sandies. I headed for the barn at 10:30 pm after a short visit to Pier J for nothing.
