#3981, "Halibut in SD"

Sunday I launched from Oceanside Harbor with my kayak fishing buddy Mike in his 15' boat. We got a light load of sardines and headed out to the 65' flats to start drifting. The drift was a nice offshore drift and soon we found ourselves in 75' of water. That's where Mike got bit. Something nailed his sardine, but he let the fish eat for a good 45 seconds before setting the hook. He hooked the fish solidly and the fight was on. It was obviously a good sized fish, but we weren't sure it was the right kind. 5 min later, a huge halibut glided to the surface. I grabbed the gaff and quickly stuck the fish in the head insuring its capture. Mike was stoked. Fish weighed just over 20# on my digital scale. We each had a few more bites later in the day, but didn't connect. Had one sardine that was completely shredded from nose to tail, but my trap hook had fallen out and my circle hook in the 'dine's nose had turned around and embedded its point back in the baitfish. Doh! Felt like a heavy fish too while it held onto the bait.

Same day in La Jolla, my other kayak fishing buddy, Tom, nailed two big halibut. One was 10# and the other 22#. His were both caught on small macks.

I want one, dang it! Maybe next weekend.

TL,
Adam
