#7982, "Oct. 12 - Haskell's Beach - Float Tube Report"

Started around 7:00 am below the Bacara the water had good color and not too many weeds but a pretty large swell made fishing the shallow "honey hole" we found last week difficult. My boss Mike joined me this morning in his kayak. He discovered Big Hammers about a month ago, did very well on a trip out at the islands and has fished from his 'yak a few times since.

The bad: I wasn't feeling 100% and the swell was not helping. I eventually ended up getting sick. I first for me in the tube. On top of that I made the mistake of thinking it would be warm like last weekend and wore my wetsuit again. Waders would have been the right call - I was pretty cold and that made it difficult to fish. On top of that the anti-reverse clutch on one of my reels started slipping which ended up in a huge bird nest when I tried to pull a snag loose. Spent about a half an hour cutting the nest out of the spool.

The good: My boss caught his first halibut from his 'yak on a Fastrac - about a 20 incher. After a while of working the area he went exploring. He paddled out deep, then made his way up toward Naples Point. He found a spot around where the shoreline bends (out to the point) where I saw him working for quite a while. I stayed near the pier and worked it for all it was worth with the 3 & 5" Hammers and the Fastrac for a couple of bumps. Around 10:30 Mike paddles up with a nice 24" flattie he got on the 4 inch Big Hammer (I forgot to ask him the color). He was stoked and ready to head home. As he paddled away I finally hooked up and landed a 25.5" flattie (tagged & released).

Funny how one nice fish can turn an otherwise bad day around!
