#8343, "South Orange County still Kicking 'em out"
Outside Dana Point Harbor...
I went to the little pier in the harbor at 0530 to make bait. Had SWARMS of itty bitty smelt coming to my chum, but nothing big enough to bother with.
Went back to Doheny beach at 10:30 and launched from the sand just south of the short jetty. I put out a sabiki rig with a smelt colored 3.5" fishtrap on the bottom of it for weight. Caught 6 perfect sized (except maybe bigger is better?) smelts on the 200 yard kick over my beach hotspot.
I immediatly caught 2 keeper halibut, 23" and 24". It was then slow for a bit and then I caught a couple of short hali's another keeper 22.5" and a big 'ole shovel nosed shark.
I let the sabiki in the water the whole time and ended up always having extra bait in the pail the whole three hours I fished. Every 10 minutes or so a school would come by and i would get one or two or three. No problem.
Steve in the red kayak was there with a 30" and a 24" 'butt he caught before I arrived, on dead chovies. I missed the best bite- low tide- and maybe should have tried the harbor with Cucamonga Keith (he caught three keepers a little later, to 35"), but you just never know where the real action will be...
