What better way to enjoy todays awesome weather than fishin?!?!

The skinny:

The Boat: Calico Hunter III

The fish: 19 legals mixed calicos and sand bass also a mixed bag of rockfish, lings and healthy cabbie.

Locations: 1 mile reef to The Rincon, and all spots in between.

Baits: 4"-5" Big Hammers browns, reds and greens as well as Assalt Twintail Spyder Grubs

The details:

I met up with Larry and his brother Scott at his place this morning at 5:00 a.m. ready to find the calico bite. We immediately headed out to 1 mile reef, metered some fish and dropped a mix of 4"-5" baits. The bite was slow but Larry hooked up first and later nailed this quality bass.

We moved on and kept hitting spots from 1 mile to the Rincon.

The bite pretty much stayed slow the whole day, we picked fish here and there, but nothing too steady. We definetly worked for the fish, and some decent fish did come over the rail. I plucked this one just before we decided to pull up and move.

This fish was caught on a Watermellon seed Red Assalt Twintail spyder grub, this was my first time using this bait, and it is kind of a kick to use.

Larry did yank this one as well, but it must have tired him out :7

The most commonly asked question that I hear when I talk about using plastics is "What color do you use?" We were primarily using reds, browns and greens, to immitate what the fish might be eating. Right now, fin bait is less prevelent, and fish are holding closer to the bottom, so small crabs, worms, larry mentioned bristle stars as well. So we fished 4"-5" colors that match the hatch.

I learned a lot just watching Larry, but he was happy to suggest a technique and hopefully he didn't get too tired of my questions.

All in all, a slow day, but great weather, got to pull on a few fish, and learned a thing or two in the process, can't go wrong with that. Thanks again for the invite Larry, I had a great time!
