#17919, "San Antonio Report"

I got the chance to fish with my buddy Bill last weekend at San Antonio. I dont really know the lake very well and in fact only really have 1 spot, largemouth water. Bill has 3 spots that are all smallmouth water. We were on the road before 8am saturday and on the water by 10am. Headed straight to Bill's 1st hole a deep streach of bank that he has got some nice smallie's in the past. I begin with my wiggle wart and 2nd cast I hit a 2+ lb smallie, good start and really pretty looking fish. Bill ties up the wiggle and we continue down the bank. Not long and bill hook's a nice 3.5lb+ smallie, biggest smallie I have seen in a while, but there would be more of these to come. At the end of the bank I get a 2.5lb smallie on the Wiggle and we moce to Bill's #2 hole. We spend maybe an hour there and Bill get's another 3.5lb class smallie, unreal. I couldnt believe the size of these smallie's. We pull out and continue down to Bill's last spot and dont get touched. We then continue south to some of my off shore stuff. I start off with a half oz. jig and get thumed pretty quick in about 12ft of water and boated a 2.5lb largemouth. We continue to work the ledge's for nothing then we make another pass over the bank with crank's. Bill switch's to the fat free shad and I bring out the wiggle wart again. Right away bill get's a 3lb LM on the shad and backs it up shortly after with a LM that was pushing 4lb's. Bill got on em pretty good on this spot catching 8-10 LM nothing under 2lbs most around 3lbs. I was able to get 5-6 off this bank in the same weight class. It was funny because all these fish came in about a 1 hour span before the sun went behind the hill and it started to cool down. Bill had noticed the LM had super red jaws from eating dad's and said to me" look at how red that is, and he still wanted the shad" I commented back " gotta have a lil sushi with that lobster right"? we both laughted and continued to work the ledge before heading back to the room. We were settled in by 5PM hung out for a while an got some rest.

Sunday:
We knew the bite would be a 10-2 bite but would be lucky to fish till 2 since we both had stuff to do sunday night at home. We woke up to super thick fog, packed our stuff and head to the water. Decided to put the boat in at Harris Creek so we wouldnt have to run as far in the fog. We finally got to Bill's #1 spot and broke out the wiggle's again. Totally diffrent conditions then the day before but it was also earlier. About 20 minutes into the morning I stick a beutiful 3.5lb+ smallie on the wiggle and release her. We decided to work some new stuff after we finished this bank so we could hit the bank again after the fog was gone. I was able to get a 2lb smallie on the new bank on the wiggle but that would be it for the new bank. The fog was trying to clear so we headed back to Bill's 1st spot and right away I hook a smallie but he comes undone. We continue to crank this bank and about half way down I get another 2.5lb class smallie, "wow this lake has some sweet smallie's" right at the end of the point bill's get's a nice 2.5lb smallie and we continue to spot #2. We fish all the best stuff on this spot and are thinking we should run to my water for the rest of the day since the sun was out and it felt right. We decide to continue down the bank to the end of this stretch and sure enough I hook a 3lb LM on the last point and Bill hooked up as well but he came undone. As I was fighting my fish I looked down and saw another 3lb class LM following her. Very Cool to see this time of year. After I let the fish go I told Bill I think there telling us something, lets go to the LM water. Right away Bill make's a long cast on the flat before it drops off and gets hung on the wood with the fat free shad, he pulls on it pretty good it comes out and he is like" hook up" lol very cool suicide fish. He pulls the 2lb LM in the boat and release's it. Soon after I stick a nice 3.5lb LM on the wiggle and continue down the bank. We are getting good fish all weeeknd and expecting to get at least 1 in the 5-6+ class but it just doesnt happen. We complete the bank and turn around to make another pass about half way up the bank I get a nice 3+lb LM on the wiggle. Bill ends the day with a 2lb+ LM and we have to call it quits at 1.

It was so nice to get out on the water with no one else out there, air temps got into the mid 70's and the bite was great for January, need to get back down there soon.
