#26945, "When will I learn?"

I hit on some decent fish today at Kaweah. It was peaceful there. Not many people at all. I thought I'd give some crawlers a try to see if I could pick up some small guys first...so I was using a #1 hook. Within 15 minutes I thought I had a dink pickin at it so I tried to set the hook and missed, let it settle back down and it went right back for it. This time I gave it some more time then I really sent it home... and wham I was bent and line was coming off like crazy. I played her and played her but just couldn't get her to settle down. I then did the same dumb thing I did last time I had a sow on, I tightened down the drag and lost her! I did every thing else right. I set the hook real good, I let her run, I pumped the rod just a little to gain back some line. But I got scared I was going to lose all my line. After she got off I switched to 1/0 hooks and landed two decent 3lbers. One was so full of baitfish that it was puking them up when I got it up to the tube. They were all real grumpy hard hitting tough fighting fish. I'm new to this game, that was only my second really big bass. I'm a slow learner, but once I get it, I get it right. Next nice fish I get into can have all the line she wants.
