I know most of you guys are fishing for big largemouth bass most of the time when you fish the big plugs but what about the striped bass? Actually, my new years resolution is to get a big striped bass on a plug and a 10 lb bass but the striper first. What baits do you guys think are best and do you guys have any tips besides following the trout plants? Maybe a thread on stripers will interest some of you :-)

after i got this one from the surf i was hooked!
i thank you all for any info!

That's a very nice fish you got from the surf, congrats!!

Big LM and stripers are both top predators and feed on smaller fish in general. All the big baits used by LM fisherman will work for stripers as well, they both love trout!! There is not allot of articles or knowledge in general on stripers in freshwater, or big ones anyway. They are very agressive and are on the top of the food chain, so they usually have the prime feeding grounds, but you tend to catch LM's while fishing for stripers or vise versa so it's very similar when targeting both large species.

So like everyone says, go fishing close to trout plants, fish where the trout are and sometimes the worse the weather the better...and fish often :P

Good luck...

I used the fish the Delta about once a week or so throughout the winter for stripers. The seven inch green/silver MS Slammer was by far the best swimbait/trout plug type lure for me. I would fish it on a stready retrieve so just the tail would be breaking water. The Mission Fish would also get fish for me in the deeper water when the stripers were tight to the tulies.

i have caught most of my stripers on the trout baits, at the time the 9" osprey was the bait to have, i caught alot of stripers to 10lbs with this bait, and also lost a monster that me and my partner estimated at 20+ at castaic lake, she came off 2 ft from the net. but also i like throwing the super spooks in the early mornings, especially overcast or drizzly mornings. most of my stripers come in crappy weather.

srw

If you're fishing the SF Bay area, definitely try a 9" MS Slammer or a 6" Big Hammer. I fished the beach around Pacifica a few times this summer and there were times when those baits were getting bit really well and other guys were not getting so much action. I didn't get any real big fish but 8 to 18lbers were totally average. It's pretty fun when your Slammer gets by the surface and they nail it :)

Throw all the swimbait already mentioned but my favorites are the MS Slammer and the Triple trout. The main thing is if they are feeding subsurface use the Triple trout. If the are on the surface use a 9" MS Slammer in Rainbow. And the best spot is right at the boat ramp. Then go to the points to the right or walk the dam. If you are lucky enough to hit the lake when they stock it, you will be in for a good time and overcast days are good too.
