Should you use bolts or sheet metal screws when putting the bases on. I've got an aluminum jon boat. What did you use Rob?

1/4" bolts with washers backing them inside and out. I suppose its possible they could tear out, especially on the anchor mount but you have to figure that you can't anchor a jon boat in hight winds anyway because you just start taking on water.

I don't know what holders you got but the Cabelas ones are pretty cool because you can mount their anchor pulley in the rod holder base or vice-versa.

The boat I have sucks for mounting rod holders. It's like they never considered that someone might want to add one. I'll try to take some pics to show how I wound up mounting them. Basically they are inside the boat with the hole of the base facing toward the inside. It's a little odd and hard to explain.

I was just talking to Alan @ Fisherman's Warehouse, he suggested JB Weld. I've never used it, and am a little nervous it won't hold. Apicture of how you did it would be great.

I've used JB weld to try to fix holes in my old boat. It's an OK product, a little hard to work with, but I don't think it would work well for glueing something to your boat that would come under a lot of pressure.

Was he saying to put it around the bolts when you tighten them down or something? I could see doing that if you wanted the connection to be extra strong. If at all possible, I would bolt your holders and anchor pulley bases down with four 1/4" bolts.

No, he said to weld the base right to the boat. I really don't want to drill clear through the rail. I suppose I could just use the JB Weld and sheet metal screws for extra strength. The anchor pulley is easy, I'll use the 1/4" bolts because all I have to drill through is the corner brace. And yes, these are all the Cabelas brand

thanks for the pics Rob. I think I have somthing figured out. I sure don't want to drill through the sid of the boat like that, but it doesn't look like you had any other options.
The paint sure sucks on these boats doesn't it. Has anyone ever stripped the paint and gone with the aluminim finish? Just curious
