#205, "Advertising on the Site - A change in Direction"

Recently I have been doing some thinking about advertising on the site. It has never been my intention to make money from the site but I had always thought that it would be nice to be able to cover the hosting costs with banner ads.

The first ads that I ran on the site were for friends like Jason Diamond on the Stardust and Pete Skarda at Wilderness Outfitters. I didn't do those for money just for perks.

More recently I added some more commercial type ads to the site. Gary Yamamoto's Custom Baits was the first and our deal was a trade which worked out great. Yamamoto Baits is a great company and they treat everyone who they deal with respect and courtesy. Our deal is for 1 year and their ads will remain on the site until that time is up.

With some of the other ads I began to run into a situation where I had to worry about getting paid and sending invoices. I don't mean to badmouth these companies in any way. I just found myself thinking, hey I have a day job =) why should I be dealing with this? So we decided to take the ads down with no hard feelings.

Calfishing.com has always been about fishing since the early days of Jamon and Rob's Fishing Page. It will always be about fishing and I will do my best to stay focused on that. I think that without banner ads the site will stay more on the track that it has always been on.

Thanks everyone for your continued support of the site and all the great fishing reports and posts I read every day.

-Rob

Websites that are not out to make money are few and far between and keeping up this site for no other reason that love of fishing is quite admirable! Lets hear it for Rob, what a guy!

Rob,

Your sites are solid. Calfishing is a model site for just about every other site out there. Your message boards are da bomb.

Although I like revenue generating website ideas, I think you're decision is great. I think your work here will pay off in other ways over time. No doubt about it.

Matt
