#522, "Scorpion 1000 or Curado SF?"

LAST EDITED ON Apr-07-01 AT 12:15 PM (PST)

These two reels seem to be about the same except obviously the Scorpion is a japanese reel. They are the same price and both have a wiffle spool. But the Scorpion seems to have the same ball bearing handle that you find in the Calcutta TE, Calais, and Magnesium Chronarch. The scorpion also has a metal star. It seems that the Scorpion is a better deal but I thought I would see if anyone has one before I decide on anything.

Leif

Oh ya,

That's a pretty good price for a scorpion, I'd say charge it. The only drawback might be that if you ever need it serviced you'll have to send it back to Japan. I know I've got a calcutta 200XT that I sent to Shimano for some reason about a year ago and they couldn't do anything because they don't have the schematics for it. So, you've got the curado SF which seems to be slightly lower than the scorpion, but is more readily available in the US and can be serviced in the US while the scorpoin seems to be a bit better reel, but not as easily serviced. I'd go scorpion.

Shimano couldn't take care of your 200XT? What happened to their stellar service everybody brags about?

The 200XT is the japanese model so they didn't have the schematics for it. They did what they could (clean and lube) for no cost, but I guess it's against policy or something to work on a reel if they don't have the schematics for it.

I talked to Shimano, there are different parts which Shimano American doesn't have, so there is no way to fix that reel in the U.S. It is a different reel with different parts, that is why you have to go through Shimano in Japan for the non American market reels.

Is that right? When I bought it I was under the impression that the parts were interchangeable with the American 200. Guess not. Oh well, good thing the problem wasn't major...

Actually, I forgot. It was a while ago. Whatever it was, I fixed it :-)
