Long time ago I had a favorite speed trap color. Sort of a chrome, white, blue deal. For whatever reason it got bit well for me. Then for no apparent reason, Luhr Jensen started making that same color with a purple stain on the butt. Now its discontinued but I still have some and it sure is annoying trying to scratch all the purple off.
Fast forward to more recently. I got into the Megabass ITO Vision 110. They have some nice colors but all I could get was the greenish looking one with, you guessed it, purple on the butt. Why is this?
I started looking around at various baits and I keep seeing this especially on the Japan baits. There will be some killer color and then they have to ruin it by putting purple on the butt. Does anyone know where this came from seriously? Like who sent out the memo that said lures have to have purple butts?

Rob, I got the purple butt lure memo a few months ago,but threw it away..LOL..I believe your seeing purple because it holds it's color at depth longer than most colors..Thats just my 2 cents..Nathan www.Bettencourtbaits.com

Well, when I read this I had no clue what you were talking about... A couple hours later I was throwing my Dep's bluegill pattern Buzzjet sticking fish pretty good. As I was cleaning some crap off the treble hooks I noticed that my bluegill pattern had a bright purple butt! I couldn't help but laugh! :P

magmaster, you are probably right - the difference is very minimal. For me its just a confidence thing. I like natural colorations on my baits and a violet or purple tail just seems odd. I really do wonder what company was the first to do this and why other companies followed suit. Luhr Jensen, Megabass, Deps and probably a few others I am missing did that for some reason, hm.
