#3766, "Sutherland last Sat."

Late Friday night I decided to fish the Floattuber.com Tourney Saturday morning at Sutherland. On 1.5 hrs sleep I arrived to wait at the gate in the frigid early morning. When we launched It was still cold, with almost no clouds in the sky. I started w/ a 2.8 and a 1 on a 6" red w/ black and gold flake Senko. Unfortuanetly, that was also how I finished. Once the sun broke over the hills it went from very cold to very very hot. Bite died, and the rest of the day was really slow.

I was having fun though, until my tube's crossbar ripped out. Then I was sitting wierd, hurting my back, and lost my favorite jacket. So, the next day I went out and got a Kayak. No more worries about airleaks, tears, or tides. Just have to stay upright.

Really though. I had a good time at the tourney, met some cool people, and refreshed my intrest in hitting all the lakes around here.

nice, Ed- I fished Sutherland the Saturday before, the pond jumper I launched did very pretty circles while being blown around the lake in the rain! I got skunked, but I like the lake. Might fish there or maybe Dixon this Sunday. Where you fishing next Sunday?

Sorry Chris, don't fish Sundays very often. We go to church in the morning, then usually just laze around together. I do fish every Sat. though. I think this week we'll be hitting Tidelands Park on Coronado. But, it's all up in the air. I wouldn't mind a freshwater trip, though Dana Point on the yak sounds cool too. You fish Sat. at all?

Ed, I always reserve Sundays for fishing but I'm usually around for a short fish on a Saturday (but I can always plan ahead and fish Saturday). If you are launching the yak from DP Harbor, I could meet you in the water at Creek or Strands on the longboard for some calico fishing. I think the paddle around the point would be a lot easier then dragging the yak up and down the hill at the beach! I think I'm in the market for an inexpensive bass boat before purchasing a yak, but the longboard works out pretty good for the checkers.

I think at least this week I'll stay on flatter water. I need to get used to it. Once I'm ready, we'l definitely meet up out there. That's one of the first areas on my list of places to hit. Any Sea Bisquits out there these days? Gundy nailed a couple biggies last year on the point. Me, I need to get rid of the stripe on my back.

Hi Ed,

Sutherland can be pretty decent. I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. I haven't been there yet this year, but when the mossy grass grows to the surface, and there's some pockets with floating mats, grab a frog and hold on. Sutherland actually gets a decent frog bite. It may be too early still, but something to remember.

Thanks for the tip Matt. Never been in a frog bite (frog skunk, yes). I'll keep an eye out for the matts. I did see some at the end of the Isabella? Arm, but not much and only inches of water.

Here's a tip within a tip. About the frog bite, first the mats need only be in a couple inches of water and if the fish hit and miss the frog, toss a Senko on top of them. It's smaller size makes it easier for the fish to actually get into their mouths. I won 2 club tourneys last year at Sutherland and 1 at Otay doing that. The bonus with a Senko is that if they don't hit it coming across the mat, you can drop it off the edge. Give it a shot.

Thanks, I'll try the Frog/Senko combo. Any tips on which frogs to use?
Probaly hit Sutherland next Sat, if we don't go out to the 'Sea'
