Hello,

Has anyone gone tuna fishing lately off of Newport Beach, Dana Point, or Long Beach? Any suggestions, I'm going tomorrow on Monday out of Newport Landing. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds fun, here's what little I know of the situation right now. If you are bringing your own trolling gear, bring cedar plugs, small feathers and small smokers or chuggers (the small Ballyhoods are doing well). For bait fishing bring it all. The bites can be very picky ( though they can get wide too) and light line has often made the difference. That's about it, good luck, and let us know how you do.

I would go with Davey's Locker rather than newport landing. They are pretty much right next to each other. The crews of both the 3/4 day Freelance, and full day thunderbird are excellent. Fishing seems to be pretty good right now but there are on and off days so there is no sure thing I guess that is why they call it fishing.

I am bummed, as soon as I leave for school the fishing picks up. I hear from my friends who are still down in that area that the fish are only hitting 20lb test, which makes for a tuff fight. I would bring some heavier stuff just in case it gets wide open. Good luck

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the info. Just got back and it was AWESOME!!! I ended wit two Yellowfin Tuna and on Skipjack Tuna; all three caught on a ABU 6500C3, with 15lb test and a trigger stik. There were boils all around the boat; but if you want to get bit; 12-15lb test was the ticket. Pinhead anchovies were the bait, so a little sliding 1/8-1/4 oz sinker with a #2 or #4 hook was used. It was cast, wait , and ZIPPPPPPP!!!!!! True I lost about 5 fish, but that was the only way to get it. Some people using 20lbs didn't even get a fish. Ther was this little girl in her early teens that caught 5. All in all , it was a great trip.

Best regards,

Khanh

Glad to hear you got some. How was the fight on the 15lb? Fun I bet, it puts angler and fish on much more even terms. It makes the satisfaction much greater after boating a good one when it's on the light stuff. Good job.

The fight on 15lb was great, I ran around the boat twice. Everytime I see color, the fish bolts. I prefer this type of fishing, Cause it is a fair fight. I've caught 20lb yellowtail on this outfit before; many times. It took me about 20 minute per fish on 15lb p-line xxtra (extremely strong line). Well, I think the tuna is only going to be around for a couple more weeks before the rock cod season kicks in. I'll try to get out one more time before it ends. See ya on the water!

The yellowfin Tuna were on average 10-15lbs, though one guy did land a 28lb one; same guy caught a 30lb Dorado. Not to worry, he caught both on 15lb test. The boat was the Patriot. There were 27 people on the boat and the crew was very experienced; helped avoid tangles. Remember the key is small hooks (#2 and #4) and light lines (12-15 test). Some people didn't catch anything, though we had more than +60 fish in the boat. Fish was crashing all around the boat, but the anchovies were really small, so it was hard to cast. Good luck and good fishing!!!
