Too much kelp to surffish, so I fished the rocks off the north end of the beach for a few hours with squid strips. Caught and released 4 fish...an opaleye which fought well, a wrasse, a catalina blue perch, and lastly a legal calico (13 inches) that put up a fun fight. Nice day down there!

Hey, TBrumfield, I've seen your posts on Salt Creek, and I'm wondering which part of Salt Creek Beach you usually fish. There's the north cove accessible from the parking lot near the Ritz Carlton, and the south cove that runs up against Dana Point. I usually fish the south cove, but I have had mixed (i.e., poor) results lately. Do you think any particular area is any better than the others?

I'm planning on going out there Sunday morning, and I'd appreciate whatever pointers you could share. Thanks.

I normally fish the north cove, however there are less sandcrabs here and more kelp...especially where the rocks start which can make it tough to fish. That is part of the reason why I have been fishing the rocks a bit lately...just too much kelp to fish. The south end (Strands area) normally has more sandcrabs and less kelp and is actually easier to fish. Lately the kelp has been a big hassle...lets hope it goes away soon!

try some of the corbina you might be suprised. If you go to strands try the very south point right up against the rocks. there are ALWAYS fish there on the right tide but fisher beware....they are damn smart and you better be ready for stealth mode... i need to get out there but i have been discouraged because the last three times the fished proved to be smarter.....go figure.

plus, those ugly left wedgers that come off the point can distract an angler, make him want to surf- there is officially a 100 dollar bounty on every sponger down there, save a corb, kick out a sponge

this is really not needed, as the first solid -180 chubasco has all the boys on red alert, funny how fast the tea bags disapear when it starts going off-

the spotfins are thick down there, get on them

Thanks for the tips. Any suggestions on tactics to get those corbs and croakers? I usually use the 1.5 in. grubs (motor oil w/ red flake) on a Carolina rig in the whitewash. I'm going to try throwing Kastmasters (1/8 and 1/4 oz.) out past the break. If I'm wasting my priceless fishing time, or if you have any other tips, I'd be much obliged. Tight lines.

If you are looking for halibut with those kastmasters....the halibut fishing down there has never been good for me.
As for the corbina...I carolina rig sand crabs on a small short shank hook.
