#1687, "Baja surf & Fish Question"

Going as far as Ensanada on a 6 day fishing(camping) trip.
Anyone have any advice on surf fishing spots, or something I should not miss? Good Campgrounds? Surf Spots?
Thanks, I will post a report of my catch and release.

You should check out Estero Beach Hotel. You used to be able to camp there with a HUGE lagoon mouth right there. The tides race in and out, and halibut gather right at the mouth.

At times, it can be a fish a cast!!! Most fish are small 14-19 inches, but big fish do come through, I have heard up to 25+ lbs! There are also many orange mouth corvina in the lagoon. Do you have a boat?

The surf in front of the lagoon is fun beach break.

Make sure to stop at the fish taco stand with a halibut, they will taco it up, YUMMY!!!!! I believe that Jesus and Maria still run it. they are good people, if you have room, take a bag of goodwill clothes to them. If it doesnt fit them, they will find someone that it will fit on.

Estero is about 9 kilometers south of Ensenada. Also be sure to check out La Bufadora. IF you have a small skiff, launch outside the lagoon, unless you are good at going through waves, and fish punta banda. Great Bass, WSB, Barracuda and halibut spot.

Email if you want more detailed info, I can find a chart and mark some spots.

Just as you come into Ensenada, on your right is the Corral (Coral?) RV park and marina. Drive out to the end of the jetty and fish on the sea side for many sand bass. Not too sure if the water is clean enough so that the fish caught are edible. I stayed at the Hacienda Don Juan in Estero Beach. Rooms are clean and inexpensive ($30 - $40).

The La Fonda north of Ensenada is a nice place for a lobby dinner, I've caught legal butts off the beach there, and a nice south with a little westerly to mix it up makes for some nice left barrels! Not the heavy tubes of Baja Malibu, but nice thin lipped little zippers on the right swell when the sand bars are set up out there. Close to Puerto Nuevo, too. Good eats!
