#2942, "First Corbina"

Well Ive surf fishing quite a bit as of late,Ive never caught the elusive corbina,Till yesterday!Went down to fish the out going tide at hollywood beach yesterday morning, and caught 4 perch to abot a pound before the sun broke through,1on the crab three on the grub, now I usually fish the grub exclusivly but lately ive trying the crab in hopes of corbina, and I tell yoy corbina fishing 101 works!I found a transition area in abot 2ft of water that the fish were working and kept my crab in there, so I see this nice one coming so I hunched down and slowly crept back up on the beach, and all the sudden my rod loads up! Im thinking finally corbina! woohoo! un fornatly he didn't put up the best fight :-( but it was about 22inches long and Im guessing 31/2-4lbs beautiful fish though! so I let him go! So now I got the fever! went out and bought a crab trap(digging them by hand sucks!)and so 6lb berkly flourocarbon(who knows?)Oh and I was fishing 6lb p-line with a 4lb p-line leader with just a regular #10 worm hook, although I went and got the little red gamies afterwards ;-)Anyways I just thought I would share my excitement!....Larry

P.s whacked the sandbass on the ventura/oxnard flats on my boat saturday lots of 4-5lb fish!!

Larry you crack me up :-) Corbina are fun. They kind of remind me of brown trout. Just wary and hard to catch but fun! Nice work with the sandbass, it sounds like that bite is pretty good.

That first time feels great, doesn't it? I haven't done real well in the early mornings and thought it was because the rising sun was behind me and at Hollywood Beach, would show my silhouette. It does make it easier to look into the water and see fish, though.

The "CalicoHunter" has given me live bait several times while I fished from my kayak in CI Harbor. Thanks!

Come on guys! I know you local corbina fishermen have some thoughts on this. Any advice from the expert, BillH? I know Hollywood Beach isn't the only spot around...

Here's a tip. South side of El Segundo jetty on incoming high tide. Use a trout pole spinning setup with 6 lb. test tied to a small swivel with about an 18" leader. Put a 1/4 sliding egg on top of the swivel and use a small extra sharp hook. I have caught big corbina here up to 5 lbs. using not only the sandcrabs, but also using small squid strips as well as mussels for bait. Try standing just at the beginning of the jetty, only about 5 or ten yards off of the water line for better vision and casting. Walk the beach too.

Any beach in SoCal will have the corbina on them during the season. The corbina cruise the shoreline so there really are no "spots". For Ventura area, I like Emma Wood to the north and McGrath to the south. Also, driving south on Harbor Blvd toward Oxnard, just before the Kart Racing track, is a turn-out bordered by a pipe fence/gate. Park there and trek towards the ocean. Once on the beach a left turn will put you by the Edison plant outflow. Can be a good halibut spot. A right turn puts you fishing toward McGrath. This stretch is good for perch and corbina. Little fishing competition here and virtually no swimmers (it's a hike) to disturb the fish.
