#3585, "New Brighton on Friday 10.26"

The dude at Fisherman's Wharehouse in Cupertino said that there is a decent pick on stripers and perch at New Brighton so I'm gonna go give it a try in my 'yak. Is anyone else free friday morning? Wade, what's up? Hope this sea lays down. The guy said it was 10 x 10 this morning!

I could also use tips. Have not fished saltwater in the kayak and have never even been to this beach.

Here's what I'm gonna haul:

1/2 oz carolina rigged motor oil grub
swimbait with 1 oz. head
krocodiles
frozen squid (if I get desperate)

I want to but there's these pesky little things called Work, Rent, Car&truck, etc.
What about Sat.
If you do go take a Silver/Black Pencil Popper, White Hair Raiser, some Pro-CURE 'Butt Juice, and maybe a 3/4oz Rat-L-Trap with a chrome body and any color back, last but not least, Renosky Scattering shad in pearl or a light colored big tube,(to imitate Squid). Also your Swimbaits should cover #1*****Anchovy (3-6"), #2***Sardines (4.5-7.5") and #3*Brownbaits AKA tomycroakers (4-8"). The Anchovy pattern 4" should get the most bites, with the brown baits or Squid imitators getting the biggest fish. Don't be surprised if you catch a White Sea Bass or a Halibut.
When you get there from the parking area head N (technically W). There are some rocky areas on the beach, out from these you will find Eel Grass beds and isolated kelp. FISH HERE!!!!!!!and all around here. When I went with Nicolo this is the general area where we got 4 WSB, my Halibut, and I got 5 rockfish (I don't know if Nico got any Rockfish). Another guy a little further out hooked a Thresher Shark flylining Sardines. When we were there, there were thousands of Pelicans in the area with tons of activity. The strange thing was the fish hit when the activity level was low where we were.
I expect a full report hopefully before I go home on Friday.

Tight lines,
Wade

I've got a funeral this weekend. It's one of these two day deals where family are flying in from across the nation and stuff. Thanks for the tips, though.

Thanks. I lived with his family for the last two years when I came up here to study. He was a graduate of Santa Clara Law school where I'm currently attending and was a mentor and a buddy. Heck of a guy.

New Brighton is a fantastic place and I'm so glad I'm a member here because I heard about it off this board.

Here's the recap about how it went down.

Had to tube it because could not find the tie downs for the yak. Kicked out by the cliffs at 6:50 A and was bouncing a green flake scampi tipped with a squid strip to see if there were any halibut around. Got whacked by something strong and it dragged me around. Brought it up to color and hoped it was a white sea bass but it turned out to be a dogfish shark. Kicked it all the way back to shore to take some pics and released it.

Went back out to the spot and picked up a rockfish. I forgot they had spines and while I was trying to get the jig out of its mouth, it flopped and punctured my seat cushion. Barely made it back to shore before it fully deflated. Threw it in the cooler, grabbed the spare cushion (I like to sit high) and kicked back out to the spot. Tried working some birds a bit further out; ran across a large school of 'chovies. Jigging through it could not get past the croaker (I think, or they might have been drum) that were so thick. Every drop was a hit. No halibut at all, just croaker.

Finished off the day with some more shallow water rockfish. Will try again this Friday on the yak if the weather holds out. It was beautiful - calm seas, light breeze, and the sun came out ~11AM.

So, you found it and had a good time, caught a nice little shark, rockfish and some tommy-cod.
From the last pic I can see you were in the general area Nico and I got our fish, except we were generally atleast twice as far out. Let us know how you do next time.

Tight lines,
Wade
