I got out of class early on Friday and tried to catch an earlier flight out of San Diego around 2pm. No luck there so I had to wait until 7pm. With 5 hours to kill I drove along the waterfront there by the airport until I saw a sign that said "fishing pier". I fished for about an hour from the pier and from shore throwing a #13 4" big hammer on a 1/2oz head. I had 5 or 6 tap tap bites that I think were little spotted bay bass but none of them hooked up. As I was getting ready to leave I got a little grass on my bait and started reeling it in fast. As it gets shallow a very nice halibut chased it up and boiled right behind it. I think the grass kept the fish from hitting the bait. It looked like about a 30" fish. Wouldn't that have been a kick :-) Beat sitting in the airport anyway...

Rob, that was probably shelter island pier (?). That whole area can be really good on the bass, both sandies and spotties. I also have fished off the boat launch rocks. This is the area that the SD guys on the board float tube. There are eelgrass beds all along there. next time you're down this way, like in Orange County for class, etc. let me know ahead and we'll go from shore or in my skiff. SD was a bit too far south for me.
