#9589, "Hit The Spotfin Croakers Today"

After many attempts to have some love from the surf recently and with marginal results, I decided to harvest some fresh mussel from the Oceanside Jetties at low tide and fish the Oceanside Harbor Channel.

A couple of weeks ago, I was down at the docks and observed all of the big piling perch that were there but I wasn't equipped to do battle with those brutes with the light stuff I was toteing.

Usually, those little black crabs will win the perch over if presented properly but they we wouldn't have it today.

The pay off today was on the incoming tide on a rig that consisted of a basic rig of

(1) 1/2 oz egg wieght
(2) 24" leader
(3) #6 bronze bait hook
(4) 4# P-line.

Landed 6 Spotfins in the 3-5lb range. All released. All Spotties caught in about an hour's time. After that, the bite shut down big time.

Good to have some love for a change!!:7

>where did you get your spotfin.

Say what??!! And give away my "secret spot?"
:D

Try wetting a line over at the North Basin in the vicinity of the Marina Inn. Channel side! Incoming tide is best. You don't need to cast far. Casting from the rocks no more than around 20 feet or so should do the trick. I leave the bail open on my spinner so when they pick up the bait off the bottom, theey can run for a bit. Spotfins are usually no trouble when fishing around jetty rocks . I've lost alot of Spottie Bays and Sandys that love to play hide and go seek there. x(

One note: Whatever gear you take with you...make sure you take it back with you as boaters and motel room tenents are complaining about the trash left by irresponcible fishermen there. If the Harbor Master gets too many gripes... they could shut the place down to us.

Pass the word and good luck!
