I had my last finals at school thursday so I talked my dad into doing an overnighter for the c-bass with me. We went out on the Cat Special out of Daveys Locker. The boat is big and comfortable. The crew was outstanding and always there for you when you needed them. Now for the fishing. The last couple of days had been wide open so we hoped it would be like that. We hooked out first sea bass at 5 and that was it for a while. I hooked up on my first legal halibut about 9 pounds. Then we started to hang some fish. The schools would cruise by and we would get one or two. The yellows also cruised by but they were big and mean and most were lost to the kelp. I hooked a big sea bass and it took me up to the bow and got tangled in the anchor line. The deckhand James was right there to try and untangle it. Finally after about 5-10 mins of trying we got it loose. Good thing as it was over 30 and ended up winning the jackpot. We had two biologists from DFG on board and they weighed , measure and withdrew blood from all the fish.My fish was 47 inches long and bottomed out their 30 pound scale. A little bit later I hooked and landed a 16 pound halibut. My dad ended up getting his c-bass also which went 17 pounds. The boat didnt limit out but we ended up with 18 c-bass , 4 yellows and 7 halibut for 22 people. IT was a great day on the water and the crew of the Cat Special was great.

NICE WSB!! I was there too! I was on the Seahawk LXV. No joke about the big YT! I lost one on 30lb test (I got sawed off by a guy who was also bendo with one). Oh well, you win some you lose some.

We got limits of WSB, spotty calicos, a few 'cudas, and I got the only halibut (no scale, but it was small @ 24").

I am going out on the Island Tak on Sunday, hopefully we will run into so WSB at the islands!

Again, congrats on the croaker!

Great Report! It sounds like like had a nice mixed bag with those halibut. Hey Calicobass I hope you get in to the seabass next week but even if you don't your in for good trip on the Island Tak. If you've fished the Tak before then you know what I'm talking about. The boat doesn't offer much with no galley, not much size, or luxury but it is one of the fishiest boats you will ever ride. Captain Steve Kelly is second to none and is considered by many old timers to be the best calico bass skipper on the south coast. He has charters that roll their dates over year after year. It's hard to get a charter on that boat because it's always booked. Good luck.

Yeah, Steve is great, and so is John. I have been fishing with them for over 10 years now. My club charters 1 trip a month with them, and I occasionally book my own charters with Steve.

Yesterday was pretty slow. We caught 31 calicos, (22 released), 1 halibut (short), 1 cuda, a few whitefish, a couple blue bass, and that's about it. VERY slow day...but it seems like we did better than all the other boats that fished the islands. The water was cold, and dirty. Steve started out looking at Yellowbanks, but didn't even give it a try. He then moved to the other side, and gave China Harbor a try. From there we just continued making our way down the island for spotty fishing conditions.

Steve metered some WSB near China Harbor, and some private boaters reported they had limits of WSB, but we couldn't get the croakers to bite. We tried a few drifts for nothing.

We all had a great time, and we all got a little sun!
