My cousin and I tubed Los Alamitos Bay this morning. I started of with a 24 inch hali right of the bat. Than another hali around 20 inch. Because my cousin just got the tubed yesterday, he didn't put it correctly so he had to get back on shore to adjust it. I went with him to see if he needed any help but before I head back, I toss out a lively 7" smelt. As soon as it hit bottom I got pick up. Instead of setting it I just free spool and went to shore. When I got to shore, I told him I got picked up and the fish is still on. About five minutes pass and he got his tubed fixed, I went back out because with all that line out I wouldn't have a good hook set. Got right above it and hook up. Brought up a 25 inch hali. Glad I left it that long. The hook was barely hook onto the lip. As soon as a gilled him the hook pop off. One more lone sandy. I also got pick up by a mysterous fish. Because I don't use a trap hook, I free spool my line. The fish picked up and ran out taking about 50-60 yard of line. I went after it but it just kept on taking more line so I stop and set it. I didn't get a good hook set and missed. Too much slack or the stretching of mono??? Reeled it in with bait still in tacked. My cousin got two hit, one resulting in a 11 inch hali.
