I heard about WSB being caught in SF bay near Alameda. Can anybody confirm that they're in there? If yes, are we talkin' about legal sized fish? If not, I'm wondering how far north they're commonly being caught. I know they're getting further and further north as the population grows along with the sardine population.

There has been the odd fish caught, but as far as I know, no particular spot, or any consistancy to catching them. The only WSB I hear about are keepers, other wise they wouldn't make the fish counts, but I assume there are also some shakers.

there was a pretty decent bite out near Capitola last year, but mostly undersized fish I think. A lot of flyrodders were after them. I doubt there's many in the bay.

Go to the link and check out this awesome pic. This dude was stumped but it sure looks like a skinny WSB to me. Go to the Berkeley Flats posting by Bear on 5.16.01

That's a seabass if I've ever seen one. How cool would it be to have seabass all up and down the coast? Fastrac mayhem from SD to SF. I hope SF can get a good little population going. I'd encourage catch and release even on the legals right now if I were up there...

LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-01 AT 08:53 AM (PST)

Hey Guys,

There is no doubt that it is a WSB. I live in Alemeda and have talked to a couple of guys that have caught them while drifting for halibut. The numbers on these fish up here are not that great(that I know of). They come few and far between. I have yet to talk to anyone that is actually targeting them yet. Brain has the right idea on catch and release. I think all the fish caught around here should be release until we have established a decent population of fish. In the next week or two I will be going out to see if I can catch a few of these guys myself. I will let you know how it goes. Wouldn't it be cool if there are good numbers here and noone is fishing them!! We will see.

Tight Lines,

Clay

Here fishy, fishy, fishy......

COOL!!!
I'm soooo glad to see they're gettin' a few up here. I agree about C&R until we get 'em in here thick. I wonder just how far north they'll go? It's gotta get too cold somewhere.

"Catch and release....SAY IT!" LOL :-D

Any body know how to upload that picture to the server? I gave it a shot yesterday but couldn't pull it off.

Bruin,
To post an image, click on post, just like you normally would when you are going to post a message.
Look above at the writing in red.
Where it says "File Upload Enabled Click here ot upload your file"
Click on that.
From there you need to select what kind of file you are uploading. If it's a picture it's probably a .gif or .jpg file which they describe there as GIF or JPEG. Select that box. Then click on Browse. The browse button allows you to select a file on your local computer. For example you might have something on your desktop, so you would browse to c:\windows\desktop. The tricky part is that in the browsing window it might not show you all of the files on your desktop. If it doesn't you need to click on the pull down menu that says "files of type" and select "All files (*.*)". Once you've done that it should show you everything on your computer and you should be able to select a picture. After you select the picture, click on upload file!
This takes the picture on your computer and copies it to the calfishing.com server. Then it tells you where the picture is and says
"File was successfully uploaded to remote server. The URL of this file is"
The line below this is the link to the picture. Highlight this text with your mouse and copy it (right click -> copy). Now go back to the window where you are posting your message and paste that link in (right click -> paste). When you post the message, the link will automatically be interpreted and changed into the image like so:

A good one from Anderson Res.
It sounds complicated but once you do it once it's pretty easy.

I saw that report on Calfishing also, and there have been incidental catches in the bay for the last 3 yrs. It seems there on a comeback here also, but enough to target I don't know?! My buddy hooked one at the Berkeley Flats last June but it shook free at the boat cause he tried to yank it up into the net within a couple minutes thinking it was a halibut and it went ballistic! We never hooked another but the guys at Hi's Tackle said a few more were caught. But a buddy of mine said a boat in Monterey is starting to do night trips that will start by getting live squid then going after WSB at night, I'm gonna get out there soon , and I'll give a report.
