Since the other thread is getting cumbersome here's a new one. We seem to have enough to call it good. So I say...
Shelter Island around 5:30am, meet in front of the beach to the right of the launch ramp. We should be able to get a good 5 hours of fishing in. Who's invited? Anyone who can show up, in any fishing device. I'll post on Floattuber too, maybe a few of them would like to join us. I can post some bait preferences and tips for those unfamiliar with the area, if anyone wants it.
Post if You can make it.
Amish Ed
Brian, email me again. I'm sorry, but I'm really busy. You can stay though.

Bring lots of 3-5" grubs and fish traps with 3/8 to 3/4oz heads. That's about all you need. Anything with orange seems to be pretty consistent. Light line makes things fun. I usually fish 6#. Wouldn't hurt to toss a few krocadiles in the box too just in case there's some barracuda around.

Adam you forgot one thing, all the freshwater stuff. Need the zippers and freaks, worm hooks (I like wide gaps), and bullet weights. Crankbaits (some do really well with these), spinnerbaits, and bucktail jigs too. Just about anything can work on the right day with the right attitude.
Definitely bring the 6#. All your lead should be in multiple sizes. Between the current and water depths up to 60'+, depending on where you are, you could be using an 1/8oz bullet or a 3/4oz one. I use 3/4oz triangles for my swimbaits and sometimes it can be a wait getting them to the bottom. Bring full spools. I usually let out about 1/2 a spool when fishing the deeper water with the lighter baits. I like oranges, reds, and greens. Orange and brown (a Steve color) 10" grub, red with light red highlight 10" grub, and the Green Illusion Brush Bug by American Fishing Products are probably my favorites right now.

In the shallower spots, those cranks can be deadly. I've caught some huge spotties in Mission Bay on those things. They do seem to work best in the shallow eel grass flats though, and SD Bay doesn't have nearly as much of that as Mission.
Never tried the zippers in the salt, but I have used other FW stuff. Spinnerbaits are a fun one too.
One rig I've played with a bit is a heavy duty drop shot rig for drifting. I tie a 1oz torpedo on the end of the line and then tie a straight shank worm hook about 2-3' up from the sinker. Thread a WHAM bait on and drop it to the bottom. Leave the reel in gear and just stick it in the rod holder and let it drift with the swells while you fish the second rod. Works pretty darn good.

Thanks for the hints on cranking the bays. I've had a couple on a small jointed Rapalla Carolina rigged, fished in the deeper water. But that's it. Yet I know the top competitors in this year's big SD bass tourney all used cranks. I also know Steve is a big fan of dropshotting. I think he uses a regular setup though, just like in the fresh. Me I can't seem to make that work either. At least not regularly. Zippers and freaks, now those I can fish with. I like the Robos and Berkley Powerpulse worms (I started with these as an alternative to Whams), too many colors to name though.

Just bringing it back to the top as a reminder, and to invite anyone who has hasn't seen it. Looking forward to meeting some new anglers, and putting faces to names. Any help with directions, tips, whatever, just post or email me. Sound off if you haven't already.
