Lots of short calicos off the jetty at times by the marine institute...the pier is generally slow(mostly shinerperch), by the bait receiver there used to be lots of white croaker. I haven't fished there in a few years...may be some bass/halibut around though.

I fished DPH today off a skiff. First, we went about a mile and a half south out of the harbor, nothing there except that my friend hooked up for about 45 minutes on what we thought was a WSB, but he lost it. So we moved out around the outside of the northernmost jettie, about 50 feet away from it, and that's when they started hitting it. I hooked into what I think was a corbina. He ran for about 20 minutes then snapped my line. (Second loss for the day.) Then my boyfriend hooked onto another WSB, and he lost that too after about 10 minutes. We were pretty discouraged by this time, but it got our hopes up for big fish. We didn't have an anchor so we spent most of the time drifting and goin back, driftin and goin back. That took up all our fishin time. We were only out there for a couple hours. And most of that time we took fightin those fish, which unfortunately we never landed. Bad day I guess. We did get a calico and a sculpin. (Yay)Goin back next week, hope we actually land one of those whiteys next time.

Were you and your boyfriend making bait today with the dropnet off the Dana Point Harbor Pier? I was right next to you guys and caught that Salema (had orange horizontal bars on it) that I gave to him. Bummer on losing the big fish...are you sure you hooked into a corbina? They normally only bite on sandcrabs, worms, etc! Good luck on the WSB the next time out!

Yep....that was me. And no I'm not sure on the corbina part. Jose said that's what he thought it was since it never turned, and it just ran in one direction. And Jose did catch a corbina off mack three days ago, so maybe they changed their diet :P Heeheee. Well, anyways, what ever it was, I'll catch him next time.

You must be either psychic, or you know me from the pier. Cuz that's exactly my problem with one of my poles. The other just got spooled a couple days ago. Seriously though, was that a crack, or you one of the guys I know from the pier? :P

The surffishing was so slow that I decided to play around on the pier in Dana Point, and caught my first ever salema. I didn't measure it, but it might have been around 8 inches. I never caught one before--interesting fish...made some funny croaking noises out of the water. Not a fish to brag about, but it saved me from the dreaded "skunk"! I gave it to Sharkgirl's boyfriend...I think he gave it to an asian couple that wanted it. If I had a dropnet...like sharkgirl, I would have caught all kinds of small fish(like they did)that they used for bait. It was nice actually meeting people from this board in person! Good luck next week sharkgirl...post here and let us know if you get a big WSB!

Matter of fact, about the live bait... didn't catch a damn thing with em. We actually used squid and mack. Used the live bait for a little bit but didn't get a bite so I got restless. I knew we were only gonna be out there for a little bit so I switched to the frozen stuff. Now that I think abotu it, I never have luck with the live bait so I don't even know why I bother trying to catch em. :( In my opinion, squid's the best. Catches everything. Caught almost everything with it. Even a halibut. Weird huh. Ahhh... oh well... when the fish are hungry, they're hungry....they don't exactly read the books, know what I'm sayin.....

Todd,

During the summer, if I go down there for surf fishing I'll let you know. I've been having corbina on the brain lately. That's good you didn't get skunked, no one likes it. Ed was worried about getting skunked on sunday but while we were talking he caught a little perch and he was happy.

SharkGirl,

Don't give up using the live bait. You'll catch a big fish on it. I mostly catch halibut with it. Todd has seen some of my live bait reports but I do lose some big fish too. Good luck

Anthony

My favorite fish to catch from the surf! Got all of mine on sandcrabs (in summer)...I agree Sharkgirl that squid is good bait, but I have NEVER caught a corbina on squid. The only reason why I like it is because it stays on the hook well(most fish do like it though), and I am too lazy to buy bloodworms. I may have to though if I want winter corbs! Sharkgirl, I would listen to Anthony as well...keep using that live bait...it will pay off for you eventually with halibut, WSB, etc...let us know how you do!

that when I hooked up that one time, I had thrown a mussel on the hook. So it wasn't squid I was usin. BTW, good shark huntin in huntington beach. Got plenty of bites last night and caught me a pepper shark and a bunch of thornbacks. Haven't seen any halibut there in a while though.

I take that back. I have caught things with live bait. Caught a shark once and a thornback (banjo) with it once. Just no luck on the halibut and bass. :(

It was a rather tasteless but humorous reference to busting off fish. Of course, try my psychic hotline at 976-Fishslayer! :7
