#4895, "Shelter, 2-23-02"

5 of us met up at Shelter, I launched at 6:45pm, Steve and Manny about 1/2 hr later, Rod and Dan maybe 2 hrs after me. Fish bit well, every one had fun and caught fish. Manny in fact had his best trip ever, he was excited and stayed out late with me after everyone else left at 10. We finished around 11:30. I finished the night very well. 18 legals to 5# and 3 shorts (maybe 2 of them spotties).

Most of the fish were caught on the freak (even the big one), though I kept stopping my R and D to fish the 9" grub. Kept hoping for some bigger fish, but only the 5 was big. Most were 2ish. Hope the big 'uns aren't gone already.

Pretty mild when the wind wasn't blowing. Water temp is still up (maybe 60 deg.). Not much water moving, but, then again with a high tide launch we didn't want the typical Shelter Express either. I think the slow water is why the fish were short biting too. I had at least 5 tails bit off, which for whatever reason never happens to me. You had to sit on the bite. Had to wait for at least a second hit, preferably accompanied by a good shaking.

Must sleep now.

Good night,

It felt good to get the tube in the salt again. I'm convinced your "Edhog" is a good bait. Can I submit my order? LOL. For nighttime tubing, I was glad the Shelter Express was on hold. I was short bit a lot too, but I contribute some of it to not bringing any 1/0. Caught a few nice bass anyways.

That was fun :).

Sorry Rod, no plans to sell them as of now. Maybe, if they keep working like they are now. But, we'll see... On the other hand, if you want me to give you some, that can easily be arranged. Glad you guys made it over. Did Dan have a good time? Any plans for next Sat? I'll probably hit it at night again. Tide looks right for a 7ish launch, back at the car around midnight.

From what I gathered, Dan seemed to enjoy the bays. He especially enjoyed our first launch of the afternoon in Mission Bay, and we talked about trying an area by the SDS Center. They hold kayak tourneys over there and is known for halfway decent spottie fishing. However, even with the crazy tides to contend with, I still believe that Shelter and S.D. Bay as a whole, is a better fishery.

Another area that should start producing soon is the Tidelands area of S.D. Bay. Last spring the 'butts were on the chew, including a few corvina, white seabass, and of course the spotties. I'm told this is a great spot for the grunion runs, but I missed out on those evenings last year. Wanna go? ;)

I'll be hitting Walmart this week to find one of those head mounted lights that you and Steve have, and probably Frys to check out those cool running lights.

I'll let you know about next Saturday as the week progresses.
