Whenever the water gets warm enough. If we keep having weather like this, I'd say two to three weeks. If we get some storms to screw everything up, who knows...

If I could predict that 100%, then I wouldn't be working here! :D
Just go fishing. The worst day fishing beats the best day working!

Fish a rental coffee-grinder upside down with an (illegal) 4 hook, 300lb 7/0 deepwater gangion. find a dead dine behind the baittank, pin it through the back.

Go up to the bow and let it drop to the bottom. Make sure that your drag is either WAY to tight, or WAY too loose. Hold the rod under your armpit and crank and yank on the rod with eratic movements, grunting and breathing hard. Rest the rod on the rail. When the fish comes to the surface, try to pull his head out of the water, until the deckhand tells you not to, and say, "WOW, is that a shark?"

I know all this from working as a deckhand on the boats. If you see a pattern in success, emulate it. I have seen so many tourists from Montana who come out for the first time, using the methods described above win the pot with white seabass.

Whoa moondoggie, you described it exactly! There was this guy on the bow of the Seahawk on this one trip with a 3 foot long rod and a giant old Penn reel spooled with what looked like 80lb dacron. Needless to say he absolultely slayed them. And yes, he grunted while he came down the rail, it was hilarious. I must have been one with the barni on that trip though because I got nine legals and busted off a couple.

Doesn't drinking too much beer also help.

I like the rig that you describe. I think I'll try it for wild trout in Montana. It should also work in the Rancho Goleta pond.

I find that a rusty sparkplug works even better then a pyramid sinker, and don't forget to pick up a few packs of those snelled baitholder hooks to attach to your brass snap swivel.

Try four days before the next full moon. That's usually when the bite
picks up.
