I have been getting the reports from baysidemarine.com that the salmon are coming closer in to shore in the santa cruz area. They give numbers, but I don't know how far out that is. I don't have a gps just yet so I kinda lost on where to head out to. One of the places they talk about is Soquel hole but i have no clue where that is. Are there any good maps of the monterey bay that are less than 25$? Thanks in advance.

To find Soquel Hole, from Santa Cruz Harbor, go E to the point seperating SC and Capitola. Capitola Bay is the Eastern tip of the hole. Turn SW and look for boats and/or a steep drop-off of 50+ft minimum. Good Luck!

Have you been out this year yet? I know you scored pretty good last year on a trip with some random private boater that you met at the docks. Was wondering if you wanted to fish out of a 'yak sometime. I'm done with finals on the 14th of May and plan on fishing the remainder of that week before I start my summer internship. I'd be glad to fish with your OK. relatives anytime after Friday 5.3. I've got a whole week in between my exams and will definitely need some time to flush out my brain. That's about the next time I'll be available to head out.

As for new brighton sharks, I caught a spiny dogfish in about 30 ft of water there last year on a whole squid with 1oz of lead while float tubing. But that's about it. From all the reports and stuff, it doesn't seem like its a hotspot for leopards, or even rays for that matter. I'd think something more brackish like Moss would be better that's JMO. They're insisting on shark?! That's a tall order. Good luck.

I don't know if I can guarantee Tiburon(Shark) without it, especially being shore bound. We're trying to keep this as low budget as possible.
Have you ever tried the beach and breakwater at the North end of the Monterey Harbor? It looks like the prevailing current would send the chum either under the Breakwater and into the harbor or down the length of the breakwater and out to sea. It looks like we wouldn't have any problems with bathers, etc. because the waves are to small and messy for surfing and too many for swimming. There aren't a lot of hazards for novice fisherman here either, rock reefs are in the area but not within casting distance from the cement causeway which would be good.
As for getting together with you it's pretty much going to be either a Sunday before evening church or after morning church. I usually go to one service or the other. Or I could leave work early on a Monday. I have my Floattube all ready or if you have an extra 'Yak I'd be up for that. I've played in the surf on a 'yak and gotten crazy in the American(Class 3)and Kern(3-4) rivers in one, so I could probably keep up with you in one. Lets hit New Brighton or Capitola or something.
Moss usually doesn't have any sharky love for me from shore or otherwise until late May or June and stays good through September.

Soquel Hole is 6 nm True South of Santa Cruz Harbor. Most of The Fishing is to the East of the Hole in 200' of water. A 150 deg course from the Harbor will put you among the Fleet.
