#7795, "Tidelands, 9-21-02"

Launched around 6am. Back in by 11:00ish. Pretty foggy, light wind, and water temp around 66º. Met up with Steve B. a short time later.

Started off w/ an Edhog, but only got shortbit. So, I went to a 3.5" rainbow trout Storm (curly tail). Bites were frequent, but yielded almost all short spotties (two micro sandies also got stuck). A couple legals eventually came up too. I also played w/ some Powerpulse worms and Gizit tubes in various colors and also some baby brushhogs (watermelon/red flake). After all the normal stuff still kept the shorts coming, I tried the Storm Hot Craw (red). Hoped for a 'butt, got a couple more shorts and my biggest spottie (maybe 2#). It was a lot of work for those few fish though so I played around for a while trying different stuff. Still pullin' shorts and pickin' a legal here or there. But it was slow going.

All the while the wind was blowing harder and harder. Lot's of chop. Sun more or less out. Current was movin' out at speed, but it was against the wind.

Eventually, I went back to the 3.5" Storm. Then figured out a pattern that was getting bit. Basically cast up current (with the wind), wait 5 seconds then a slow grind back. Drift was slowly up current, so it was kinda weird all around. Felt like I was doing everything wrong. But, I doubled my count in about 45 min. Best action was in 10-15' working across the inside ledge. Eventually this pattern died. Figured the increased wind, dropping current had changed the way the fish were oriented. So I turned 180º. Sure enough picked a couple more real quick. By this point though both my butt and Steve's were both tired, so we went in.

I finished with 20+ shorts and 7 legals. Though I don't remember the exact #'s, Steve managed to stay in the zone all day and did at least 30+ total w/ a 3# kicker.

On a side note; while Steve and I were fishing the dropoff (this was when I was on the pattern bite) these two other kayaker's show up. One paddles behind us, in the deeper water. The other guy starts paddling right across my bow. I casted twice in front of him to let him know where I'm fishing. He keeps going. I give him a head nod to say what's up w/out yelling into the wind. He doesn't acknowledge me. I actually had to stop fishing to let him by. They then squeezed in between us and started fishing. No Hi, mind if we join you. Nothing. Then when they couldn't catch anything they start bitching to each other that we must be using squid and paddle off in a huff.

I realize that it isn't that big a deal. My day wasn't ruined. I don't own or have any rights to a given area. But, I also think that we must all exercise a little courtesy on the water. Am I wrong here? Heck a simple hi, whatcha using would've sufficed. They could've even got a couple baits off us.

BTW, I haven't fished meat for bass in 3.5yrs, and wasn't even using scent on the Storm curly tails.

Overall, a great day on the water. Glad to spend a quite day on the water with a friend. That we caught fish all day just made it all that much sweeter. Of course, I still would've taken a couple big fish too.
