#83, "October 17, 1999 - Goleta Beach"
|
Nearly perfect conditions - Beautiful day - only one short! My brother and I met Mike Edwards out and fished plastics off the stairs. We went out around 1:00 pm (high tide 3:45 but the rise was very small). Water Temperature - 60 degrees. The halibut was caught on the Sardine Fish Trap around 3:00 pm in 7 ft. deep water right in front of the stairs. It was about an inch from legal. From the conditions I thought we would be hooking up more but it was still nice to be out on such a gorgeous day - in October!

Are the stairs out by the "point" where the surfers were tearing up the waves? Ever fish south of the Goleta Pier? Any good?
TIA.

Hi Bill,
The stairs are about 1/2 way out to the point from the Goleta Beach parking lot. Really the entire cove from the parking lot out to the point can be hot at times for halibut. Out towards the point the calico bass and white seabass (always short for me) fishing seems to improve.
How is the corbina fishing coming along?
See ya,
Mike

...people have said that south of the pier beyond where the slough enters the ocean is a good spot. I will probably try it sometime next spring.

We weren't actually fishing from the stairs. The halibut was caught in front of the stairs.

Thanks, Mike and Kanamit! I'm not real smart but I sorta guessed you got the 'but from the sea...
Seriously, my best day halibut fishing was between the slough (is a "slough" like a river mouth or estuary?)at Pt. Mugu and Mugu Rock, on a gently sloping bottom - which sounds a lot like what I might find in Goleta on the "other" side of the pier. I'm making a drift sock and getting an anchor so I can stay in a spot like you float-tubers. After that, comes a kite so I can take advantage of the wind coming back in!
Aside from the posts you've seen here, I haven't been surf fishing. So, I guess the corbina are safe!
BH

...you could get a float tube! I tried an anchor on my tube once but lost it - I was too stupid to remember to lock the clip. Anyway, one of the nice things about float tubes (that Mike reminded me of this weekend) is that you are always fishing. You don't have to put down your rod to adjust your position or move. When I first started float tubing 15 years ago this was one of the benefits I loved the most.
