#8695, "zuma surf perchin' report 1/11/03"

Went out to Zuma beach today from 2:30 - 4:30pm to do some perchin' with Frank (Thresher) and Mike. We started by throwing the usual motoroil/red flk and each caught a small fish. It was pretty slow so Frank and Mike moved to some rocks and I stayed behind. I thought that visibility might be an issue with the big waves so I tied on a 1 1/2" bright neon orange grub. That seemed to be the ticket. I caught a couple of walleyes and a BSP and then I get nailed hard! The fish started pulling out drag on my 6lbs outfit. Pulled it in after a solid fight and it was a 12" BSP. My biggest ever from the surf. Around the same time a kayaker tried to launch into the surf. He got worked by a wave and 2 lifeguards had to bring him in. Be careful out there. ;)

Summary:
Fish caught: 5 BSP's and 3 walleyes (all released except 2 for dinner)
Bait: neon orange 1.5" grub
line: 6lbs mainline and 4lbs flouro leader
Retrieve: Kept the line taught enough to feel the bite but letting the current drag the grub around.

Good going on the perch. Keeping the line taut is critical when surffishing so you can feel those bites too.
