Daniel and i hit the Goleta pipe today from his yaks and did pretty well. The count was 4 sand bass the biggest to 17 inches, a couple calico to 18 inches, one ling that went 22", and 3 rock fish. All the fish were caught on big hammer 4 inch swimbaits in mackerel, squid, and silver 'chovy, on 3/8 ounch chartruse lead heads. All in all it was a pretty good day. all of the fish were caught in about 30 to forty feet of water. Nice day out there not too much wind or current.

I would like to try the Goleta pipe area in my boat. I also believe that the WaveWalker 6 pack has caught some nice sulpin there (dangerous, but tasty). Is there a landmark on shore that will tell me that I am close enough to the pipe so that I should start looking for it on my meter? Interesting that you caught a ling in such shallow water. In norcal I caught many big lings over surprisingly shallow reefs, so I guess that it is possible in socal too.

By the way, have you heard anything about the proposal to build an artificial reef or breakwater at Goleta Beach to protect against erosion? This has interesting angling possibilities.

The pipe actually goes right along goleta pier so its pretty easy to find, actually the pipe has kelp that grows on it and it follows it all the way out so once you see the goleta pier get out infront of it and look for some kelp and you'll know your on top of it. When we fish it we start shallow and move deeper until we find the fish. I'm not so sure about the sculpin, but we have fished it and seen the wave walker out there getting on the calico bite in the summer, which is a bite worth checking out. And about the shallow water lings, Daniel has caught many lings out there so for some reason you can catch um shallow out there. I'd just suggest catch and release out there of all fish because I'd hate to see such and awesome spot get killed. First i want to thank Brian #2 for the support for catch and release. second, the pipe is a great place to fish. it is accessable from shore, it is well protected from the swell by campus point, and has lots of fish. if anyone has specific questions feel free to ask.

Have you ever found the end of the pipe? Fished it?
How deep? I heard there are fish there, but you do not want to eat them(taste like poo-poo).

OK here are a few specific questions... Doesn't the pipe run the length of Goleta pier? Where does it start and how do I find the pipe from shore? I don't have yak or a tube yet, but may in the near future, for now I am stuck on the beach or the pier... I am down with the C&R as well especially at such specific spots.
I have been trying to keep up with the artificial reef proposals for Goleta. If they build up a rock reef out away from the beach it would certainly add a new dimension to the fishing at Goleta beach. I don't know all of the details or ramifications from doing that, but it seems like a great solution from where I sit. First off it fixes a problem and secondly it provides fish and untold numbers of other life with new structure and new opportunities to breed and live. Lastly it provides anglers a new place to fish and enjoy...but again I am no expert...Who knows more about this issue?

Jizames, im not sere if ive ever fished the absolute end, ive beeen pretty far out in my kayaks. like a mile or so. theres no kelp there but theres bottom structure. in calm conditions there are toad sandies and lings there. as to the poo poo, im not sere if that pipe is still in use, even if it is the water that would come out is treated and fairly high quality so i dont see a problem with eating the fish but, in moderation, c&r :)
mceehops, the pipe runs parallel to the goleta pier but goes much further, it starts almost at the shore its easy to see especially when there isnt much wind or current. i usually find the kelp then follow it out to 30 ft deep or so. its hard to fish from shore or the pier because it gets hit hard, but starting a hundred feet past the end the fishing starts to get good. for this spot i recomend kayaks because it would be a long kick in a tube. i havnt been up on the artificial reef idea but it sounds good, it might help with the beach erosion and other problems. i would support this plan.

I saw that post about the used ones from the harbor... about how much do you think it costs to retrofit a standard yak to a fishing yak? I don't mean with all the bells and whistles, just enough to get me out there and back safely and comfortably. Aproximations of course... I have some friends who have standard yaks I could borrow... is it even worth giving one a shot without doing some mods to it?

all you really need is the kayak, a PFD, a back rest, paddle, rod leash (paddle leashes serve double duity), and also the standard fishing requirements (a net over 18 inches in diameter and a measuring device). all of the accessories would run about 200$ depending on quality it might be more or less. but like always, buy it quality and only buy it once. i bought my kayaks and all the accessories 6 years ago and there still in good shape and i havnt had to replace anything
it would be a great idea to borrow from a friend and see how you like it. just grab a rod and real, some plastic and give it a shot. different kayaks handle differently and are more and less stable so its a good idea to try as many as you can before you buy one. i have the scrambler xt and it does very well but there are alot of other options, the scuppers are also good boats. so, happy boat hunting.

Thanks! I may just have to borrow my friends on one of these upcoming weekends and give it a shot. I have been kayaking before and love it, minus the threat of the great white of course. Just remind me not to wear any seal scented cologne... :7 How often do you get out there and where do you frequent? I saw a lone kayaker out at one mile in a Yellow yak in dense fog on Saturday morning...looked a lil lonely out that far alone, but I imagine it is also amazingly peacful.

I try to get out there every weekend, but the weather doesnt always let me. i havnt fished the one mile in a while lately its been all at goleta beach. i dont usually go alone or in dense fog (just too many stories about lost kayakers). but it is very peacefull and tranquil being on the water.
