#10582, "Scents??"

I know this question gets brought up time to time but it seems like this is one of those subjects where allot of peoples opinions change often with their experiences and results.

I honestly rarely use scents at all. I have purchased quite a few different kinds but can never seem to consistantly use them. I bring them with me but usually only apply it once or twice through a fishing session. My biggest issues have always been with how quickly they seem to wash off and fade away, especially on rubber baits.

So what are you using currently for your trout sized swimbaits and/or hardbaits. Are you using them to mask a scent, add a scent or just for tooth lubrication? Is anyone mixing a couple brands together to make a super scent? Maybe adding a few extra ingredients? How are you applying it to your bait?

I'm curious to hear what people are currently using, thanks for any additional input!

Want a great subject.
Personaly I like the use of sent.

Pitching or flippen soft plastics- I go with Bang. Why Bang for plastics. When I'm fishing into cover the bait will not hang up on a tulley. When punching through cover it seems to go through better. Less hang ups.

Open wanter swimbaits- ??? I personaly have not found the one I can say is the one for me as of yet. I've used Mega Strike, Pro Cure, Lunker Sauce and meny more. I find most of these Scents will stay on your lure extreamly well and do the tick. As for how well they stick on. I wipe my baits down at the end of the day. If you dont you can feel the resadue for the last trip.

One thing I find is you have to stick to using it. If not your wasting your time and money. Last just think of coming home form work walking into your house and you smell choclote chip cooks baking. The first thing I do is go to the kitchen grab some milk and burn my tong on some hot cookies.

I've always wondered if the scents go bad. I'm like you Phishnuts I rarely use them but only on occasion so I have scents that have been around awile. Now I'm wondering if sense they are so old are they still effective?
When I apply an old scent it bothers me that I could be driving away the bites. I really don't want to just chuck them if they are indeed still good. I haven't had a definitive answer to my question so hopefully someone here knows for sure and can enlighten me....BassMan

Scents definitely will go bad. I had a bottle I would use every now and then. I was fishing with my buddy one day and he asked me about the scent. He picks it up and smells the bottle and about pukes. The stuff smelled like week old road kill, and Ive got no idea how long it had been like that or how on earth I never noticed it. I check my bottles carefully now.

I really like the LPT from YUM, especially when bed fishing. Only problem is I use white baits, the scent is sorta red/pink, and it stains my white baits (they may offer other colors now, havent checked in a while) but for other baits its fine.

Still a Megastrike fan. Don't like it when it gets real old. Still use Berkeley Powerbait scent occasionally - more for spotted bass or small fish or sight fishing. Don't know why, just habit I guess.

I came up with a grand idea during a real cold day to deal with Megastrike being too thick when cold. I stuck the tube in my front pants pocket to heat it up. Worked great. That is until at some point during the day I noticed I had the stuff all over everything. Apparently the tube exploded in my pants, the greasy nature of the product made it migrate down my pants, and before I knew it was everywhere. Im still working on modifying that approach :-)

I am a big fan of MegaStrike as well. I have been using it for years and have a tremendous amount of confidence in the product. The tube is very convenient and like Urban, I just keep it in my pocket.

A product that I just recently started to experiment with is the Edge Hot Sauce Gel. I purchased a 5 oz. tube from Tackle Warehouse and I am impressed with how well it stays on my lure. Has anyone given this product a try? I am curious to hear the feedback.

On the bigger swimbaits I only use garlic. I don't use it as a fish attractant but to cover up any unwanted scents that may be on the bait. I always thought garlic was used for catfish but it has proven it's self over and over.

As far as soft plastics I started out using Hot Sauce gel but have since switched over to Smelly Jelly. This is on the rare occasion that I put some scent on. 90% of the time I fish the plastics right out of the bag.
