#10528, "I have two questions"

1. In general, how big do male Largemouth bass get?
2. What is the largest "confirmed" male bass caught?

Thanx in advance for any info.:-)

We all catch young bucks up shallow early in the year and we see the male hanging back to guard the fry. Really though how can we be sure they are truley male. Unless you watch a spawning pair, can you be sure a fish is a male?

Difficult question to answer. I've heard of males going over 5lbs but nothing confirmed. You have to be an Itchyologist to know. A specialist at that.

I have only seen or caught them to 5+ maybe 6 lbs. I know that because the big girls over ten were there too. Other then that I can't tell.
Lack of food or post spawn can make any smaller female look like a male. Any Male full of food can look like a female LOL.
If its over 10 you know what it is LOL!!

Best of luck!

Don.

Thank you for your responses. I am trying to get answers from a scientific and from an angler perspective for an article I am writing in Japan.

Your best bet would be to contact the Share-a-lunker biologists in Texas. I don't know of anywhere else that has a program that selects the largest males to breed w/ largest females. They have scientific data going back several years and don't mind sharing, from what I have read.

mmmm, this is a good, and interesting question.

I have caught several for sure in the 5's, weighed them, etc. I did get one that I believe was in the 6 and a half range, it was spawning with an 8lb female. I didn't want to hook him, so when I brought him in, I released him right away without a weight. It would have been nice to get a weight on that one because it was a for sure male bass, and it was exceptionally large.

My inclination is to doubt claims of 10lb male bass. I have read Andy's comments on this several times but still feel very skeptical. I think Andy got one that he said was an 11lb male at the Delta. If I remember, he got it one day and a client got it again a few weeks later. Don't know if they saw it on a bed or not. Would be curious to hear the outcome of your research Greg.

How do you know for sure you had a male bass?
