#10546, "Does ROF 5 Hudd float when not rigged with a trap hook?"

Hey well i received my Hudds in the mail. one of the was an rof 5. I tested it out and it floated. Eventhough the package says its an ROF 5, it floated on top. But after i rigged it with an Owner ST - 36 2/0 trap hook. and the bait started sinking. so my questions is:

Is it sinking because the hook is too heavy and its a floater? or all ROF 5's float until you put a hook on them ? (which kind of makes sense)

let me know if i didn't explain the question well enough, and i'll just rephrase it.

Thanks for any feed back

I had two ROF5's that floated a few years ago. They were, in effect, ROF0's. Ken said he's replace them no problem, but I turned them in to something like ROF2's with a few nail weights - just to have something different.

So if you want ROF5's, just email Ken through huddlestondeluxe.com, but otherwise you have something fun to play with :)

hmmn, thanks for the feed back.

just by adding a hook only, it starts sinking. hmmn.

where should i place the nails into the bait, so that i wouldn't affect the swimming/action of the bait.

Thanks

which also brings up another question......
if this in fact is a ROF 0, then what hook needs to be added so that the bait does stay afloat. Because adding a treble hook makes it sink.

Try using a smaller treble hook in the top of the head.

i did. and it didnt work. even with the lightest hook i have, it still sank. and just for the test, i took a Gammi 3/0 worm hook straigh shank, and attached it and guess what... it still sank. i will defenitely play around with this bait.

and should i insert the nails, like rob suggested, in the belly of the bait ? so that i wouldn't disturb the action? or the head?

It's pretty hard to mess up a huddleston with weights, which is really a testament to how well balanced the lure is.

Anywhere along the belly should be fine if you want to add weight. The lead harness makes it hard to put anything in the front 1/3 of the lure, but you can slide weights in parallel with the belly there if you want. If you can't get enough weight there, just go a little behind the harness, shoving the nails straight up in to the lure.

If you use a pair of pliers to push the weights most of the way in, you can test the lure with different amounts of weight, then - when you get it right - push the weight all the way in and put a drop of super glue gel.

are good for this sort of thing. The lead they use isn't particularly heavy, so you have to use a fair number of them, but they are very cheap, and the little edges on the nail keep the weights from falling out (most of the time).
