#11167, "Optimum AC vs. MS Slammer"

Hey guys trying to get opinions on the differences between the MS Slammer and the AC Minnow being sold under the Optimum label. They similar, totally different, or what?

Thanks,

FishnMike

All I have to say is that I'd buy a Slammer over a minnow.

Hi mike,
Did you try checking the reviews or doing a search, those 2 features might help you.

I feel there are many guys here on this site who know a lot about these baits. Why they are not speaking up, I don't know. I wish I did, but I don't, dang it!

There has been recent posts about getting this site back to like it use to be, meaning busier, I guess, I myself am fairly new here.

I'm just guessing here guys. But I think some of the big bait guys here see threads like this and kind of just glance over them because its old stuff to them. But to many of us its new stuff as we are just starting out.

Nico really opened up with some great threads and really shared some awesome info. All you other site veterans need to open up and help out the new guys with your knowledge. That's what its going to take to get this site going again.

I myself have been blabbering a lot recently and I'm going to keep bugging for info! : )))

So, practice what you preach and share the knowledge.

I have gotten a lot of help and info here some from recent threads but most from using the other features here such as the reviews and search feature. I am sure I will be asking for more help in the future so please be ready to point me and others in the right direction.

Sorry for the hijack Mike : ((
Thanks guys : )))

Yup, tried the search feature first before posting the question. Came up with some info but not really a comparison between the two and why one is better than the other.

Lots of choices on the market today and I am trying to cut down on the less than effective baits that are out there.

Thanks Nico.

Mike

Nicco, I'll throw out my two cents on this one.

My guess is not many people own the Optimum version of the AC Minnow, I know I don't. So when a person is asking for a straight comparison of two lures it's real hard to give feedback when one is a less than popular model that even AC himself was not thrilled about.

I agree though, allot of topics are brought up so often they rarely attract many responses if any. Sometimes it's all in the way you word your question, such as doing a " this lure vs. this lure " is somtimes just a bashing match waiting to happen and it turns off allot of would be advisors.

Back to the topic though, the two are both similar style wakebaits but there is so much positive feedback and reviews on the MS Slammer from this site and all over that I don't think it's much of a gamble to try one. I would suggest adding your own layer of epoxy to a Slammer before fishing it too hard, they are made of wood ( last time I heard) and if not sealed really well they will swell and crack, I always like to re-seal them again myself to add that little bit more protection from the hooks and water penetration.

Good luck with your decision...Trever

Mike needs to step up the coatings on the MS slammers although it is a great bait I own many that have spots in the middle joint that he never painted which sucks because water swells in them. As trevor said youll need to coat them with expoxy of polyurathane.. That being said I like the ms slammer much better than ac plugs because its more bouant has a better action (wider lip) and bigger tail that throws good wake. You really need Rob to chime in on this as I know its one of his favorite baits although I have cought lots of decent fish off the slammer nothing much bigger than 6lbs so I am not really an expert

Hey let that Bass go I wanna catch her some day

Hands down the Slammer wins this one. I might be just a little biased when it comes to the Slammers. The action just flat out catch fish though. My money slammer was made in 01 and has caught well over 100 fish. Including two over 10. I've put on a few coats of epoxy over the years and it's held up fine. That thing is a work horse.

All the baits that have proven themselves over the years are the ones you can go out and throw with confidence. Mike Shaw's baits have done this.

I do have a 7" Optimum and it's not a bad bait. It seems to swim with a tighter action which could be useful at times I guess.

Long time lurker...first time caller.

I just threw out my Optimum for the first time yesterday. Much tighter action + less buoyancy make it not a very good wake bait. That said it looks more like a trout when fishing it below water that the slammer does. When the water clears up I intend to give the Optimum a serious go.
