I'm making some poppers based loosely on the Gibbs and Cotton Cordell Pencil poppers, for Surf casting to fresh and saltwater Stripers. These lures will vary from 5 to 8" long and will be turned out of hardwood dowel.
I plan on weighting them so some float, some will sink in fresh but float in salt, and some will sink quickly.
What I want advise on is should I use A)a glued in weight, such as from a lead coil (which I'd have to buy), B) a glued in hard lead shot with others free rolling to create a thudding rattle (I have 0 and #2 lead buckshot), C)the same glued in lead shot with airgun type hard BBs to create a rattling rattle, or D) some combination of the above.
Also, should I drill my hole for weighting directly on the center axis, with the rear hook hanger(screw eye) below it, or should I put the screw eye on the center axis, with the weighting hole directly below it, parallel to the axis, or angling up to hit the axis at its mid-point approximately. Any input is appreciated.
