#2526, "flyfishing for bass"

hey everyone, the other day i did a little fly fishing for bass and wondered why i had never brought up that i fly fish for bass. how many of you guys/gals out there also fly fish for bass? my personal best largemouth was a little over 5 pounds and on a popper, i think it was weighed at like 5.2 or something. well if there are any other bass fly fishermen out there i would really enjoy keeping in contact with you. what fly's have been good for any of you? i have had a lot of luck on yellow and orange poppers and mouse fly's. well let me know if there are any others like me out there.

Articulated leeches, Dalhberg divers, Whistlers, and sight fishing with chartreuse Deceivers have all worked for bass. There are a lot of great guys at at the NCFFB that could probably help you out. http://www.ncffb.org/cgi-bin/ncffb.cgi

I'm brand new to the fly gig, no lmb yet, but we punished the stripers at Skinner, what a blast. Can't wait to do the calico thing with my bro, he does pretty well with the long rod.

hey you guys for the calicos try fast full sink if they are on the outside kelp and sometimes you can do good on the inside with a 200-300 grain sink tip. when using the fast full sink its more like conventional fishing then fly, but i guess whatever floats your boat. i am gonna try some of the crayfish immitations off the kayak for some boiler rock bass off of malibu, i will let you guys know how i do when i finally get out. hopefully soon because i am getting another free fly rod from a local custom wrapper. for bass its all about bass bug taper with the yellow/orange popper or mouse, have had some luck on leaches and clousers, but i prefer the surface flies.

hey scotty. i fish dry flies for trout and largemouth but have never thrown heavy things like clousers or poppers because im afraid of getting hit. is the cast similar to a dry fly cast? one time i put a split shot on my tippit to see if i could cast it. needless to say i got hit in the back of the head so hard i almost got knocked out and decided not to try anything but dry flies again.

when casting heavy flies i tend to have the rod tip more out to the side to keep the fly away from me and my graphite rod, but its kind of the same, once you cast them a few times you will get the hang of it. the poppers are way easy to cast, just like a dry, but the mouse takes a little more pratice because it catches so much wind. well good luck, if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

thanks man. i think i'll give it a try then. have you ever caught a largemouth on a dry fly? i caught one on a #14 red humpy not to long ago. it was weird to see such a small fly in the corner of that huge mouth.

yeah dries work sometimes, they seem to hit the larger grasshopers pretty good and my boss swears by this dragonfly larva, but i think it might be a wet fly im not sure. we have also had some good luck on this one hummingbird fly, it almost looks to cute to throw, but whatever gets bit. good luck.

Hey BassNet;
What were you using on the Skinner stripers? I keep seeing a guy in a center-console C&R way more fly-fishing than I am.

Bass fly fishing is awesome. Out where I am (Sacramento area)Dragonflys (which I have never found for sale, but arent bad to tie)are #1 when the time is right. I have yet to see a bass not show interest in one. Also muddlers are great, poppers, and small sponge spider's do the trick.

hey if your looking for some dragonflies try searching on ebay, last time that i needed a few more i found a guy that posts a lot of different flies and he had some dragons that looked real good, and has anyone ever fly fished the delta, i bet it would be incredible on a weedless popper or a mouse, but even my 8 weight my by quite a bit to light for in there, im glad to see that others are interested in flyfishing for bass, lets try to keep in touch with reports and hot new flies.
