#4121, "New Slammer?"

I just got a new Slammer today from Tacklewarehouse. It's different then all my others. My old ones are connected at the joint with 2 eye screws. The new one has one eyescrew in the rear part that is around a dowel that is inserted in the front portion.

The new one doesn't have as much free movement as the old one, but I think it'll be ok. One thing that does concern me though, is that the wood where the joint is at is not treated. It doesn't even have paint on it. But unlike the old ones, I can't just epoxy around the eyescrews and the joint because it has a deep hole drilled in it where the pin is placed. Epoxy or any other topcoat could cause the rear portion to adhere itself to the dowel on the front half.

Has anyone had any problems with the wood splitting on their slammers around the eyescrews? I've had this happen to an older one that has never landed on anything other then water. It split at the eyescrew and is working it's way towards the rear of the bait.

It also has a different paint job then the old ones. I like the new paint job better :D

I got a 12" slammer like yours. I don't think they have as much action as the 7" one with 2 eye screws connecting them. Then again, I never had a 12" with two eye screws.

Maybe the place you bought your Slammer had some old stock still... My dad bought a new Slammer that was a 9 inch like Woodsac's so I know that Mike is making the 9 inch in the new design....

That said.. I love the action on my 9 inch with the 2 hinges as opposed to the 9 inch my dad got with one hinge... I'm sure Mike had a reason for changing the design and I have no doubt it will catch fish.

I also read on Mike's site that the new 9" Slammers come stock with a 3/0 in front and a 2/0 in the rear. I've been using all 2/0 on my 9" Slammers. Matter of fact, I had already replaced the stock hooks on that bait before looking at his site and noticed the front hook was bigger. He does also say that the wood is water treated before assembly.

What color is that pictured? I have been in the market for a slammer for a long time. I definatly want one before May, but want to hear how the action is on the new ones before buying, if I can. I like that color though. But the one hinge instead of two doesn't sound very attractive.

The bait pictured is 9" Slammer 'Light Trout' from Tacklewarehouse. I have a 7" on the way and I'm curious to see the difference. These are all baits from their new stock.

I have only seen one 12" slammer with the new hinge style, I was a little skeptical too but the action still looks good. Whenever I see a little exposed wood on any wooden lure I just use some epoxy or liguidglass and brush a little on, just to be sure. I think the dowel piece on the front half of the bait is just a nail, if you get any excess epoxy on it you can just file or peel it off.
You could probably fill that front drill hole with epoxy or something to weigh it down, might change the action? I like the wood baits because you can always do little repairs or mods yourself..
I saw a slammer with the Generic HB style hinge , looked pretty good!

Hi Guys, thanks for all the good info on the slammer. the new style bait was an idea to make more noise, as you know the noise is the key to the slammer success. there are very few of those baits out there but they do work very well. if you are not confident in the bait just send it back to me and i will exchange it for the regular slammer. thanks, m.s

Mike, thanks for taking the time to share. I would never send it back. I've got some that run on top and some that run under and I love them all! I haven't had it in the water yet, so I wasn't judging the new hinge, just asking if anyone else had seen it yet :-)
