I have 2 slammers, the small and medium, and I use them on 17 lb. fluoro. My problem is that, no matter how slow i seem to go, neither lure likes to "wake", as i believe they should. Should i switch to braid, which floats, to keep them up more? I really want to have more confidence in this bait, but right now, the new a.c. minnow is out producing them big time. Any suggestions?

you might have a couple of baits that are either too heavey or too bouyant. Stick them in the water and see how much of the back sits out of the water, You should be able to tell or if you have a question direct it to M.S. Slammer and he should be able to help you out

are you fishing stripers or largemouth. the stripers seem to hit the bait just under the surface. slow reeling it to where it just goes under. as for the largemouth i think they like it to clack clack clack pause and then repeat. most the largemouth bites i have gotten on the slammer come on the pause. well the striper will hit the bait so hard it feels like they want to rip the rod right out of your hand.
just my thoughts and tech's for the bait. also i have notice with all of my slammer's they are different. hand crafting tends to make the baits a little different between batch's. pretty much any slammer you have will work. you just have to throw them alot and figure out which is the best way to work the ones you have.

I doubt its your line. Heres what I did to increase the wakability. I unscrewed the screws slightly to allow more room between the front and back of the bait. This allows the back half to have a greater range of movement and at slower speeds. Unscrew as much as you feel comfortable with, but not too much, you dont want a toad swimming around with the back half of your slammer in its mouth.

One of my baits I could do this to, the other did not have enough room to allow me to unscrew. However, I fish the screwed up bait just like a spook, and it really darts left to right. I just started doing this (I forgot my good one on a recent trip, doh) and I have high expectations for this retrieve.

It's probably the baits, not the tackle. Some baits dive more than others. The one's Mike is currently making float well, but a year or two ago they were divers. Not that there's anything wrong with subsurface slammers, I lost my good one from a few years ago and wish I had another!

But anyway, try going up in line size. Heavier line will float better, and flourocarbon is notorious for sinking :( I wouldn't got lighter than 20 lb for the small size and definitely don't go lighter than 25 for the medium.

Also, one trick to keep the lures on the surface is to retrieve them with short continuous twitches of the reel handle. The bait will stay on the surface better and it will be extremely noisy.

I have a older 12" that likes to dive a bit I will just fish it w/ the rod tip high if I want it to wake try this and see if it helps at all.

I noticed that you are using flourocarbon line. Flouro sinks and doesn't work too well for surface baits. Try using a heavy mono line like 20-30 pound line and it should help you out

I ordered two 7" slammers this evening going to try them on some Kentucky fish. Do you think 17 lb test is too light of line to use with this lure?

I'd also like to know of a good swimbait rod model and where I can get one, I've been looking at the Rogue models.
