Woohoo, got a coolpix 775 today. Let's see if I can figure out how to work it... Here's a few pics of the plugs I've been working on. The painted one is 7" and I haven't put any clear coat on it yet. The unpainted one will be 8 or 9", don't know yet... I actually just had a piece of wood laying around, so I started hacking at it just for practice, and the more I hacked at it the better it got, so now I'm left with half a plug that I don't know what to do with.

looks tite, but umm i'm glad you painted it that's for sure...you might have gotten some unwanted attention from other anglers if you left it like it was in the third pic...

Ok, a couple more... I'm having way too much fun with the camera. Gotta break it in ya know. Here's a few pics of some round plugs I've made. I used the 9" one at Coyote last weekend.

Ok, first lesson in digital camera 101- use the Nikon software... Here's some more pics.

9" that I used at Coyote- check the damage from not sealing properly. Look around the eyes and the spot where the wood split on the tail.

They look awesome. That baby bass one reminds me of the old Castaic wood bass, but the detail in yours is cleaner. How about making one up in a hitch color for Clear Lake, or a tilapia color for El Salto? I definitely know some people who would be interested.

Tilapia would be interesting. I've thought about making a hitch one too, but I don't fish clear lake enough. I'd have to give it to somebody like rob so it would get fished, and I can't do that... lol. Nah, I'll make one and send it up there and make a tilapia and send it down to you, and finish Josh's plug and Ed's plug (in exchange for some amish freaks, lol) and make myself a couple plugs, and hopefully go to school and go fishing somewhere in there. If/when I finish the tilapia and the hitch I'll post more pics.

What kind of wood are you using to make the plugs? Balsa?

I think it's probably bass wood (seriously). The only dowels I could find with the right diameter was at the craft store, so whatever wood they use for craft wood (I'm assuming bass). At first I was all concerned that I needed a really solid, strong wood like oak or something, but it's not a problem. Balsa might be too light, but anything that's easy to work with but still has enough strength to hold the screws in the bait will work fine.
