I know this isn't the saltwater board but my friends are here!

I just got a call from my friend John Fish, who lives in Mendocino. The albacore are 17 to 30 miles out of Fort Bragg. That's VERY early for 'em off NorCal.
His neighbor took 4 of 'em today plus limits of crab. John's got crab pots too.
It's a day of drag screamin' fun and a feast waiting to happen. The boat fishes 3 comfortably but 4 can go.
Mid July onward is very doable. If any of you guys are interested, you won't regret it.
By the way, John is the executive chef at the Mendocino Hotel and can prepare seafood like it's no ones business. :9

PS - He's slayin' the salmon. He mentioned that he's catching 3 Silvers to every King. But the Kings are going up to 30 lbs.

Let's rip some salty head while the rippin' is good!
Chris

Hey Chris,

I'm interested all right, just can't get away. I understand that the tuna trips having been doing well down this way too and still have not managed to get on a boat yet. Tuna a blast to catch, even the smaller 10-12 pound fish put up a pretty good fight!

If it looks like my situation changes I'll get in touch but it doesn't look good for the month of July. I'm going to miss the delta open which I hate to do. BTW, I've still got your CD and I think I ended up with something else of yours but can't remeber what it is right now. Anyway, since I am going to miss the open maybe you should send me a mailing address so I can get your stuff back to you.

If you make this and hook up you are going to have a great time! You KNOW you've got a fish on when a 15 pound tuna does a respectable job of spooling a saltwater reel. Word of caution: don't try to thumb the spool, you'll burn yourself.

Beware of BLUEFIN! :D
By the way, swimbait rods w/ Cutta 400's are perfect for the Albies.
Check out some of the Big Hammer tuna colors on www.swimbait.com. Put 'em on an 1 1/2 oz head and BINGO!

Whew! You guys had me worried. lol It's a fun time and the eats are sublime. John is our kinda people too.

It's still early so there's plenty of time to work out when to go.
My first trip won't be until late this month at the earliest.

Joe, once I'm mobile, I'll come down and get you if you want to go.

I'd be up for it, should be able to swing down and give Castro a ride. Let me know sometime when you guys are going to go and I will see if I can make it. Would be a blast.

Here's a report from the sport boats out of Fort Bragg. I got this off USAfishing.com

"The good news is the albacore bite broke open offshore and both private and party boats hammered big counts of longfins. On the salmon front Don Akins on the Rumblefish reports that the bite was slow for everyone. The Rumblefish trolled for salmon all day and managed to boat just 4 salmon for a big load. Don said a few private boats managed to boat limits but most struggled to hit the fish per rod mark. It just looks like the fish are off the bite as there is plenty of feed and cool water temps along the beach. The El Patron started the day off salmon fishing and at mid morning headed offshore in pursuit of albacore. At 9:AM with three salmon to 34 pounds in the box captain Tom got word ( from the Double Vision) of the hot tuna action offshore and decided his chances of putting his charter group into fish was decidedly better offshore. Joining up with the Double Vision 33 miles due west of Ft Bragg at the Vizciano Knoll 33 albacore joined the three salmon in the fish box. It was Kevin on the six pack catamaran Double Vision whom located the fish this morning. His group of six anglers landed 40 albacore to 40 pounds. Most of the fish hit a variety of jigs from Mex flag zukers to black and purple jetheads. These aren't peanuts either. Most of the fish were running 18 to 20 pounds with lots of fish in the 20 pound class. This is one of the fastest and earliest starts to the North Coast albacore season and it looks to be a good one. The weather is great with fog and little wind or swell. "

:D
