#20945, "Clear Lake Keys"

Despite all the bad luck, we want to go back to CL. :)
Is there a 'bad' time to fish the keys? We're not looking to catch 50 fish a day, just a couple. The keys are a good place for my wife to fish and have a good time. Just wondering when we should plan to go back. We would go from like Wed. or Thur. till Sun. Thanks for any help!

fish hold in there year round, but in the winter they can be really tough to get. With rattle snake and the other rock piles in the area outside the keys you can all ways find fish.

What would you guys vote for the best time of year for this part of Clear? Please consider weather, lake lice(jetskiers & pleasure boaters), avoiding other tourneys, bite, mosquitos, etc.
Tight lines,
Wade

Jake,I would recommend the state park for good year round fishing and the best campgrounds on the entire lake in my opinion.

Bill, would we have access to the keys from State Park?
The reason I ask is because my wife likes to go out, but if she doesn't feel like fishing she can still just kick around in the keys without fighting the wind. And it gives her something to look at as well. ;-) I know I don't have to worry about the jet skiers there because it's a no wake zone.

state park is on the other side of the lake..it does have good camping and a long 5mph zone as well. Personally for what you are looking for M&M is better.

State park has a fairly large, wind-protected, no wake zone "cove" that holds quite a few fish. There are also a couple of protected sloughs right on either side of the mouth of the cove. I also think this area holds fish year-round.

Jake theres lots to look at there, nice view of the main part of the lake also a couple of sloughs you can check out.Wildlife such as deer and squirles, ect, and definately alot of fish.Close to Konocti harbor if you want to see a concert or eat. Also close to konocti casino. You would be 40 minutes or so from the keys if you wanted to go there. The one thing I dont like about the keys itself this time of year is this funky algae that gets pretty ripe as it gets warmer, but like John says if you head to rattlesnake and hit the rockpiles on the way you should catch somw fish.

When I go to Clear Lake, it ain't about gambling, concerts or restaraunts. It's all about the quality of fishing and equally important, a fun, cool campsite. M&M is by far the best tournament location of any I've ever been to. It's totally laid back and the owners aren't "nazis" like the rangers at State Park. (NO music, NO horseshoes, NO laughing, NO smiling... just pay us and get out!) State Park is really lame. To me, U-Wanna-Camp is also a better location than State Park despite the fact you have to drive to the lake. Private ownership is the key.

And I'll also say April or May for the best time to fish the Keys/Rattlesnake area.

Chris
