Wow -- I just ventured over to the Calfishing video section to see Rob gettin' that 11-1/2'er, sightfishing w/spinning gear. Cool video, dude! Gets me in the spirit on a dreary old work day, fer sher!!!

Thanks for sharing! (How long has that been up, anyway? Don't know why it's taken me so long to get over to that section of the site).

That video has been on there for a while, maybe a year or so. I caught the fish two springs back. It was a fun fish, but really nerve wracking. I caught it on a Stradic 1000FH with 8lb florocarbon on a 6' Iovino split shot rod. She ran through some weeds and almost into a bunch of brush but somehow stayed on. I spent a lot of time last year trying to get fish on video but its really tough to do it on the tripod fishing by myself. Maybe next spring I can get motivated again. This year it rained so much I never even tried.

IFISH say's,

Dude, awesome video bro ! I'm a loser for not looking waaaaaaaaay earlier ! I know how you feel Rob, when I caught broke my record twice in one day, I was using a 6'6" Medium rod, with an Okuma reel and 6lb Flouro aswell. There was SOO much weeds in this place, I thought both fish were goners. They fought me awhile, but you got mad skillz mang ! reel and net at the same time, holding both at them same time ! Gee, I wonder if you have big fish expierience ?:+ :+

My 3 biggest fish, all out of Coyote Reservoir -- which includes my PB 11.5'er -- were all caught on 8-lb. test spinning gear, albeit in open water, with few-to-no-weeds or other cover. That's about as exciting a way as there is, though, to haul in a big hawg like that (as opposed to muscling it out of heavy cover on a stiff flipping setup or whatever). Damn, I remember having to kick around in a circle about 7 or 8 times trying to keep the tension on while my big dawg was doing her headshakes & surface breaks -- talk about adrenaline!

It's great, though, that you were able to get that all on video. Keep 'em coming, bud! :D

That was really cool! Do I understand that you had set a tripod up on your boat or was someone there filming it for you?

That video was shot on a tripod set up in the back of my boat. I really wish someone had been there filming because the fish went totally airborne on the first jump :) Some of the other videos on that page were shot by my wife.

IFISH say's,

Dude, that video of when you're fishing the river, near those water pipes, is insane ! I watched you look around towards the end of the clip, and the water came up FAST ! What was going on ? Were they releasing water ?

haha, yea... Huntington lake is a power generating lake and they have this massive pipe that flows into it. When they want to generate power, they flip the switch on and water comes pouring out. When they run it full bore, you can't stand down where I was fishing because its solid 50 foot tall jet of water that shoots about 100yards out. When I was down in there, all of a sudden the water started hitting my feet but that was the only indiciation that something was up. It took me about 10 seconds to realize what was happening and start climbing out. The water came up about 3 feet in less than a minute! I've fished Huntington since I was a kid and that's the only time I've ever seen them turn the water on like that during the day.

IFISH say's,

Dang bro, that's crazy ! I don't think I'd wanna be that close to a pipe that can't shoot water 100 yards ! But then again, the fishing..............:+ }( . Glad you didn't get a free water rafting trip without the raft, you'd probably be hurting if that pipe was let lose full bore !
