I just got in from being out at a customers site. Took a detour back to work and stopped off at the Outdoor sportsman. Talked to this guy for a while and told him the dead honest truth about how my fishing been these last few weekends. (Poor)
He gave me the skinny on how to catch these Stripers. At night go over to any low bearing bridge that has a good source of light to the bottom of it to navigate boats. You’ll be sure to hook up under these. He said the baitfishes are attracted to the lights and the stripers are sure to be there with the baitfish. (Hmm)
I’m going to have to give this a try…

Joey,
Same thing applies to the white seabass at night. Where there's bait, there's fish...

Hey Joey
At lake powell 2 years ago we went night fishing for stripers a couple nights. Lake Powell was infested with stripers but they could not be caught during the day. At night the shad would come to the top and all it took was the running lights on the boat to attract them. Drop a dead anchovy down about 15 feet with a 2 split shot and if you didn't hook up you sucked (or you were too loaded and passed out!). So I'd say bring some chovies and you'll probably hook 'em up.

The guy you talked to is right. My Uncle works out on those railroad thingys and has been doing pretty good. Nothing large for the past few weeks but up to 10lbs. One boat he watched, pulled out 8 fish in three hours.

As for the bait thing, I would go with shad. The mudsuckers are working but at $2 a bait not worth it. Get some shad and have some fun!

Oh, outgoing tide has been the best bet.

The day thing hasn't nearly been as hot. I have another Uncle who's been boat fishing during the day and hasn't done too well. Shad has worked for him also, though.

Hey Samurai
How are the guys using shad catching them? Dip nets or umbrella nets or some other way?

Actually Rob, the baitshop is where the guys are going. Either fresh or fresh frozen. #1 bait right now.

Oh, Rob, I decided on going with a CalStar graphiter 800 XL. I'm going with 9 SiC guides, cork tape rear handle, fuji reel seat, and foam fore grip (5 inches). Thought the weight difference was huge and didn't think I would be throwing the 12" trouts too often.

Wow
That would be a sweet setup no question. Would love to see it sometime when you get it wrapped.
I am still waiting for my 800L. Hopefully in a week or two I will be getting it.
Thanks for the info on the shad. I guess it's probably hard to make bait this time of year since the shad aren't spawning.

Put me down for the night thing. I've stuck with you this long. Can't possibly get skunked again, can we? Sat nite or Sun nite ok... I'm off Monday. Picked up the Browning fins and a pair of boots, so I shouldn't get cold toes this week. If we're going to drift bait, I'll pick up some proper rigs.

Really Joe, I'm not bad luck. This week 'we be catchin', not fishin.

And I don't care what you guys say, Joe is one hellava guide.

Steve
