#584, "June 18, 2004 - Fishing Report"

Brian #1 and I took the 3/4 day trip on the Stardust yesterday. Dan's dad was on the boat as well along with 10 other fisherman. We fished bass all day, and stayed local, fishing the 1 mile and the horseshoe. It was just one of those deals where the fish bit a little bit all day long. There was one flurry at the one mile when the calicos came right up on top and there were some nice 3lb type fish caught on big hammers. We stopped on some meter marks to try for seabass that Jason was seeing on the graph, but they didn't want to play.

At the horseshoe we just picked away and picked away and by the end of the day everyone had caught a good number of bass (about 50/50 calico sand bass mix). I had 8 legals, Dan's dad had 9 legals, and Brian had I think around 6 or 7 bass including one nice one about 3lbs. There was a guy, Gary I think was his name, who just cleaned up on the sheepshead using shrimp. It was pretty funny, every time we would go to a new spot, he would drop down and get a sheephead. Jackpot was a goat of around 5 or 6lbs.

The 4" Olive with red stripe on the bottom on a black 3/4 oz hammerhead was working best for me. I tried out the new Okuma swimbait rods and they worked nicely. I think their target market is more the freshwater bass deal, but these rods will work great in the saltwater too. I was fishing 15lb triple fish florocarbon with the swimbait which is awesome for this kind of swimbait fishing because you could really feel the fish grab the bait on the sink and get a positive hookset on them with a lot of line out. I still had my seem reel spooled up from fishing Catalina last summer and the line was still as good as new which was cool.

Fun day on the Stardust, pulling on some bass.
