If your looking at the Curado, you definitely want to spend the extra$$$ for the super-free. I've got two and I love them!
As for the rod, my favorite is a St Croix Avid casting rod 6'2" Medium. They are $150 in the Cabelas catelog. I have numerous rods, but I find this one in my hand about 80% of the time. I bought it for wormin, but it has been a great crank rod. Can't say how it compares to the GLoomis, as I've never used a G, but I've been really happy with the St Croix.
