Fish a rental coffee-grinder upside down with an (illegal) 4 hook, 300lb 7/0 deepwater gangion. find a dead dine behind the baittank, pin it through the back.
Go up to the bow and let it drop to the bottom. Make sure that your drag is either WAY to tight, or WAY too loose. Hold the rod under your armpit and crank and yank on the rod with eratic movements, grunting and breathing hard. Rest the rod on the rail. When the fish comes to the surface, try to pull his head out of the water, until the deckhand tells you not to, and say, "WOW, is that a shark?"
I know all this from working as a deckhand on the boats. If you see a pattern in success, emulate it. I have seen so many tourists from Montana who come out for the first time, using the methods described above win the pot with white seabass.
