#15542, "Huckleberry Lake Emigrant Wilderness Report"

Hi all-

Just got back from an epic 6 day trip to Huckleberry Lake in the Emigrant Wilderness. Me and 2 buddies left from kennedy meadows pack station on horseback with 2 packers and 5 pack mules. Yeah thats right 5 pack mules! A little overkill on hindsight but hey it sure was nice having float tubes and beers on ice :9 As for the report, it might be a little long but I would have loved a report on what it was like before I went so I feel obligated to tell. FIRSTLY The pack ride in, 12 straight hours on a horse need I say more OUCH! This isnt like riding on happy trails it is rough terrain. If you arent used to riding horses you WILL BE VERY SORE! The beautiful scenery does make the pain not so bad. Once you finally get there, the packers unload all of your gear and leave to start heading back(they are animals). We stayed on the east end of the lake which is the best location to launch tubes from. Finally on to the fishing, umm... sitting here trying to put it into words and you just never do it justice. Sometimes you find yourself sitting in your float tube not even fishing and just watching the different hatches. I learned a lot about flyfishing on this trip by not even fishing. Caught about 30 fish per day and we didnt fish the lake hard. Sit around camp maybe get the gull to go out for 30 minutes catch 3 or 4 fish than come on back to camp. Now that is what I call fishing! Mostly all rainbows averaging 14" and the biggest went 19. Brooks averaged around 10" and went to 14. I think 6 days is good 1 day in and 1 day out and 4 days to rest. Saw about 4 hikers passing through during our stay but had the lake to ourselves. We only needed 1 packer on the way out and 3 mules. Cost of trip for packers and mules $800 per person(we packed really heavy filled up the back of a silverado):D I will send pictures when I get a little more time. WHAT A TRIP!

Z-man OUT
