matt, matt, matt, ifeel so sorry that you only caught halibut under
24 inches j/k ill give credit to your dad about beating all of us
although he speared it which does not even make it worthy and he speared it back in the 60s where halibut like that were caught every day but that scrony little trout . as in the good words of former pres. Bush " Not gonna do it".

Nice Fish!! A 65 pound California (not Pacific) halibut is huge! I think 65 pounds may surpass the state record fish!? Anyone know what the largest ever caught California halibut weight is?

What's up, Todd? I think the IGFA record is around 53 pounds or so- mid fifties somewhere- not too many over 50 have been caught, but I know the record has been broken a couple of times the last few years. BIG BUTTS!!

Not worthy because it was speared? C'mon I know this is a fishing board, but being that I do both, I can say it's MUCH harder to spear a flattie than to catch on a line. Spearfishing for them you are just outside of or in the surf a lot of the time, visibility sucks, you typically see the tail of a flattie flapping in your peripheral vision as it flies away because it saw you first. I'd say you actually get to take a shot at one 1 in 100 times you see one. On top of that, out of the shots you take, you probably will only land a few.

The record for spearfishing a California halibut is 72.5 lb. I believe it was from Santa Cruz Island, but possibly Santa Rosa.

That picture of that fish is not the current world record.
Back in 97' or 98' some guy landed a 56lber off of a boat. I dont recall it excactly but i am pretty sure. And by the way harborrat and harbor king...if everyone caught them back in the day where are you fathers pictures of his 60+lbs halibut huh...OHHHHH thats what i thought THERE ARENT ANY!...lol my dad told me that fish gave him a ride of a lifetime;).
